Life-Term Inmate Faces Attempted Homicide Charges After Alleged Attack on Correctional Counselor in Lancaster

A convicted murderer serving a life sentence is facing new felony charges after allegedly attempting to kill a correctional counselor at a state prison in northern Los Angeles County, according to correctional authorities.

The violent encounter took place at California State Prison, Los Angeles County, situated in the high desert city of Lancaster. State prison officials reported that the assault unfolded during the morning hours, suddenly disrupting routine operations within the institution.

According to preliminary reports from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the confrontation occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on September 10. The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Marcus Curry, was reportedly exiting the correctional counselor's office when he launched a sudden and violent assault against the staff member.

Responding custody personnel acted quickly to intervene, subduing and apprehending Curry before further harm could occur. Following the physical altercation, authorities recovered a manufactured improvised weapon at the scene, indicating the potentially lethal nature of the assault.

The attacked counselor sustained injuries during the encounter and required immediate medical attention. First responders and institutional medical staff coordinated to transport the victim to an outside medical facility for comprehensive evaluation and treatment.

Immediately following the incident, prison administrators transferred Curry out of the general population and placed him into restricted housing. He remains isolated from other incarcerated individuals as investigators work to document the full scope of the altercation.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed that the prison’s specialized Investigative Services Unit has taken charge of the case. Institutional detectives are actively processing evidence, interviewing personnel, and examining the circumstances leading up to the confrontation, as the primary motive behind the attack remains undetermined.

Once the internal inquiry is completed, correctional officials plan to formally refer the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors are expected to review the investigative file to file formal charges of attempted homicide against Curry.

The incident underscores the persistent and inherent hazards confronted by non-custodial correctional staff, including counselors, educators, and healthcare workers, who interact directly with high-security inmates in state facilities. While counselors provide vital guidance, evaluations, and administrative oversight for inmate programming, these daily interactions can carry sudden and unpredictable risks.

Curry has spent more than two decades behind bars at the Lancaster facility, having been originally received into the state prison system on March 28, 2000. Over the years, he has accumulated a significant and violent criminal record that has kept him incarcerated under California’s strict sentencing statutes.

His initial commitment stemmed from a third-strike conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm, which resulted in a sentence of life with the possibility of parole. Running concurrently with that judgment was a 20-year term for assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer as a second-strike offender, a sentence augmented by special enhancements for personal firearm use and the infliction of great bodily injury.

Curry’s legal situation escalated further on February 13, 2002, when he was sentenced in San Diego County for second-degree murder. That conviction, also prosecuted under third-strike guidelines, carried an additional sentence of life with the possibility of parole, accompanied by a major sentencing enhancement for intentionally discharging a firearm to cause great bodily injury or death.

For an inmate already serving life sentences, facing new charges of attempted murder on institutional staff can drastically alter future parole prospects and result in severe administrative sanctions, prolonged isolation, and additional prison time. Legal experts note that violent acts committed against correctional personnel often trigger rigorous prosecution to deter future unrest within institutional walls.

California State Prison, Los Angeles County, has been operational since 1993 and plays a pivotal role in the state's sprawling correctional infrastructure. The Lancaster complex accommodates roughly 3,250 inmates across a broad spectrum of custody classifications, spanning from minimum-security units to medium-, maximum-, and high-security housing blocks.

To balance its security demands with rehabilitative goals, the Lancaster institution provides a variety of academic classrooms, vocational training programs, and support services aimed at preparing eligible inmates for eventual reintegration into society. The expansive facility relies on a workforce of approximately 1,700 civil service employees, encompassing correctional officers, administrative staff, medical teams, and counselors.

As the LAC Investigative Services Unit finalizes its findings, state prison authorities and local prosecutors are coordinating their efforts to ensure a thorough legal review. The forthcoming attempted murder proceedings will determine the next legal steps for Curry as he remains held under restricted custody in Lancaster.
