Santa Monica Police Release Bodycam Footage of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Palisades Park

The Santa Monica Police Department has made public newly obtained body-worn camera recordings capturing the tense and fatal confrontation in which an officer shot an armed man at a bustling coastal recreation area. The footage documents the moments leading up to the deadly encounter, which took place in broad daylight amid dozens of park visitors, vendors, and local families.

Law enforcement officials distributed the video records on Saturday, offering a direct visual timeline of the incident that occurred on August 22. The publication of the body camera media provides public insight into the critical incident, shedding light on the rapidly escalating sequence that ended with the death of an individual who confronted officers during an active police response.

According to police records, patrol units had originally been dispatched to the intersection of Broadway and Ocean Avenue shortly before 1:00 p.m. following emergency calls. Those early calls reported an urgent disturbance involving a man who was allegedly chasing a woman in the vicinity of the Broadway stairs, a high-traffic pedestrian access route leading toward the waterfront.

While uniformed personnel were situated inside Palisades Park attempting to locate the subject of the initial disturbance and interviewing bystanders, the situation took an unexpected turn. Authorities emphasized that while officers were actively questioning community members and gathering witness testimony, an entirely unrelated man drew their attention by brandishing a large blade above his head in plain view.

As captured on the newly released body camera video, the armed individual began advancing directly toward the stationed officers while holding the weapon out toward them. The recording highlights the rapid shift in focus for law enforcement as the unexpected confrontation immediately diverted their resources away from the original chase investigation.

The recorded audio reveals an officer issuing sharp, repetitive verbal warnings in an effort to de-escalate the encounter and secure compliance before resorting to lethal force. "Hey, put that down! Put that down! Put that down!" the officer can be heard shouting repeatedly on the recording as the suspect continued his forward momentum without yielding.

Because the incident took place during peak afternoon hours, the camera footage also recorded the immediate panic and movement of the surrounding public. Multiple bystanders, including parkgoers and visitors strolling through the scenic overlook, could be seen hurriedly moving out of the line of fire as the armed man closed the distance between himself and the police officers.

After the subject failed to follow explicit commands to drop the weapon, an officer fired service rounds, bringing the suspect to the ground. Subsequent examination by responding personnel revealed that the individual was wielding a substantial, fixed-blade utility-style knife characterized by distinct serrations along its edge, creating an immediate danger in the crowded public space.

A thorough search of the scene and the fallen suspect led investigators to recover additional weapons from his person. According to statements released by the Santa Monica Police Department, the individual was in possession of three knives in total, with the large serrated blade being the single weapon he brandished while confronting the officers.

Immediately following the gunfire, officers shifted from defense to medical aid, attempting emergency resuscitation and lifesaving techniques directly on the grass. The sudden violence and subsequent rescue efforts unfolded before numerous witnesses who were spending their afternoon along the crowded park pathways and vendor stations.

Caroline Iwanchuk, an eyewitness who observed the aftermath of the shooting, recounted the sobering scene of officers attempting to revive the fallen man. "I literally came out, and I could see them doing chest compressions on the gentleman," Iwanchuk stated, reflecting on the disturbing nature of the public emergency. "It was just very hard to witness."

Paramedics quickly transported the wounded man from Palisades Park to a nearby hospital for advanced trauma treatment. Despite the urgent medical care administered by officers on scene and physicians at the emergency facility, authorities confirmed that the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office later released the formal identification of the deceased individual, identifying him as 44-year-old Michael Rodriguez. Official records confirmed that Rodriguez had no established connection to the original report of the woman being chased near the Broadway stairs that initially drew officers to the location.

Following the lethal encounter, law enforcement taped off large sections of Palisades Park, shutting down substantial portions of the prominent recreation site to visitors well into the late evening hours as forensic teams documented evidence and mapped the scene.

Santa Monica police leadership noted that all information released thus far remains preliminary as multi-agency reviews continue to move forward. A formal criminal investigation is currently being conducted into the confrontation, while the department's Internal Affairs Unit has initiated an independent administrative review to examine all circumstances surrounding the shooting.
