Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton Set for Televised California Gubernatorial Debate Ahead of General Election

The battle to lead California is moving into a critical phase as the two major candidates for governor prepare to meet on the debate stage for the first time since their primary victories. Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton have officially scheduled a nationally broadcast debate that will air just as voters across the state begin receiving their mail-in ballots.

The televised confrontation is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 30, at 6:00 p.m. PDT in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Hosted and broadcast by CNN, the high-stakes political event will be moderated by veteran network anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

This prime-time event marks the first direct debate between the two candidates since they emerged victorious from a crowded, contested field in California's June primary. The debate offers both campaigns a pivotal platform to deliver their core messages to a massive audience of registered voters across the Golden State and beyond.

Becerra brings a prominent political background to the contest, having served as the health and human services secretary under the Biden administration prior to launching his campaign. On the Republican side, Hilton has transitioned from his background as a former Fox News television host to mount a vigorous bid to claim the executive office in Sacramento.

To secure an invitation to the CNN debate, candidates were required to satisfy strict eligibility thresholds established by the network and state election guidelines. Among these criteria, participants had to comply with California Secretary of State requirements and demonstrate strong financial viability by raising, loaning, or contributing at least $1 million toward their respective gubernatorial campaign accounts.

In addition to financial benchmarks, CNN required candidates to prove competitive standing with the electorate. Participants were mandated to capture at least 15% support among likely or registered voters in two separate public opinion surveys conducted with polling methodologies meeting the network’s editorial standards.

California viewers will be able to watch the live debate proceedings across multiple digital and broadcast channels. The event will stream live through CNN.com as well as connected television platforms, mobile device applications, and traditional cable and satellite pay-TV subscription packages.

The debate arrives following a turbulent June jungle primary election in which Becerra led all contenders by securing 28% of the total vote. Hilton earned the runner-up spot on the ballot, claiming second place with 24.6% of voter support to advance to the November runoff.

Independent polling since the June primary suggests that Becerra has maintained a solid advantage over his Republican rival. In an August survey conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, Becerra secured 55% backing among likely voters, compared to 37% for Hilton, while roughly 7% remained undecided.

Eric Schickler, co-director of the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, noted that following the turbulent primary cycle, the campaign is tracking like a typical statewide election in California. Schickler highlighted that Democrats historically carry a distinct advantage across the state, adding that Hilton faces the steep challenge of capturing support among demographic groups that traditionally favor Democratic candidates if he hopes to keep the contest competitive.

The UC Berkeley survey also underscored stark political polarization among the California electorate, with 88% of registered Democrats indicating support for Becerra and 91% of Republicans backing Hilton. That poll surveyed 2,310 likely voters from a wider group of 4,207 registered voters between August 3 and August 9, carrying a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Meanwhile, an internal survey commissioned by the Hilton campaign portrayed a more competitive landscape. The poll, conducted between August 14 and August 16 by David Wolfson, an analytics faculty member at Columbia University, showed Becerra holding 49.2% support to Hilton’s 41% among 912 registered voters, with a sampling margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.

With the September 30 debate set as a major turning point, both candidates are preparing for the final stretch before the general election on Tuesday, November 3. State election administrators have noted that county election offices will start mailing official ballots to registered voters no later than October 5.

California election officials have also designated October 19 as the final day for eligible citizens to register to vote for the November general election. The looming debate on CNN will serve as one of the last prominent opportunities for Becerra and Hilton to sway undecided voters before marked ballots begin flooding county election offices across the state.
