Detroit to Host Inaugural Michelin Guide Great Lakes Ceremony at Historic Michigan Central

The Michelin Guide has officially designated Detroit as the host city for its first-ever Great Lakes Ceremony, marking a historic moment for the region's expanding culinary profile. The international dining authority revealed that the landmark event will take place on April 21, 2027, bringing regional culinary leaders together under one roof.

Michigan Central, one of Detroit's most recognized historic landmarks, has been chosen to serve as the venue for the gathering. During the event, hospitality professionals, chefs, and restaurateurs will convene to discover which dining establishments across the American Great Lakes have earned coveted distinctions in the newly established regional guide.

Detroit’s selection as the host city follows a dedicated campaign initiated by local leadership to elevate the region's dining credentials. When news first broke in April that Michelin intended to produce a Great Lakes Guide, it was revealed that Claude Molinari, the president and chief executive officer of Visit Detroit, had spearheaded the strategic effort to attract the organization's attention.

Recognizing the strength of the broader Midwestern market, Molinari reached out to his counterparts at tourism boards across neighboring cities. He proposed that the various destinations join forces in a unified coalition, presenting a collective case to highlight their distinctive culinary scenes on an international platform.

That collaborative initiative between Visit Detroit and regional tourism organizations proved successful, ultimately expanding Michelin’s evaluation scope across seven major metropolitan areas. The Great Lakes Guide will cover restaurants in Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh, with Cincinnati later confirmed as an official addition to the publication's roster.

Local tourism authorities expressed significant pride in securing the hosting duties for the inaugural event. In a statement, Molinari highlighted the prestige associated with bringing the ceremony to Detroit and utilizing Michigan Central as the primary setting for the April 2027 celebration.

Molinari noted that serving as the host city gives Detroit an extraordinary opportunity to welcome top culinary talent from across the Great Lakes. He emphasized that the gathering provides a stage to showcase the city's unique dining scene, innovation, and hospitality to a worldwide audience, while giving international travelers compelling new reasons to explore the region's culinary landscape.

The venue selected for the celebration already holds an existing relationship with the French guide publisher. In 2024, Michigan Central was spotlighted in Michelin's inaugural Green Guide, a publication focused on travel, tourism, and sightseeing destinations.

That travel-oriented publication highlights cultural attractions, notable architecture, historic sites, retail hubs, and lodging options. Serving as the setting for the upcoming ceremony, the restored architectural landmark will now bridge Michelin's travel assessments with its high-profile culinary evaluation system.

Michelin leadership also praised the choice of host city and expressed enthusiasm for the region's first dedicated culinary guide. Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guide, stated that the organization is delighted to showcase the remarkable culinary talent across the American Great Lakes.

Poullennec pointed to Detroit’s deep history, culinary innovation, and eclectic dining and cultural landscape as ideal attributes for hosting the inaugural regional ceremony. He added that the organization’s team of anonymous inspectors is eager to finally unveil the findings and discoveries they have made throughout their regional assessments.

During the April ceremony, attendees will learn which establishments have earned the prestigious Michelin Star, considered the highest standard of culinary excellence in the guide's rating system. However, the publication also includes several other key categories to acknowledge diverse styles of dining.

Among these honors is the Bib Gourmand designation, which recognizes restaurants that deliver high-quality food at an accessible value, according to Visit Detroit. This category highlights exceptional everyday dining experiences that excel in flavor and craftsmanship without reaching fine-dining price points.

Additionally, the ceremony will present the Michelin Green Star, a specialty award honoring restaurants that prioritize sustainability and eco-friendly practices in their day-to-day culinary operations. The guide will also feature Michelin Recommended listings and individual professional awards, offering recognition to exceptional venues and hospitality workers even if they do not receive a traditional star.

The ceremony on April 21, 2027, will be an invite-only gathering. The event stands as a defining moment for the Great Lakes hospitality sector, as chefs and restaurateurs from all seven covered cities prepare for their formal debut on Michelin's global stage.
