Washington State Emphasizes Importance of Stopping for School Buses as School Year Begins

As the 2026 academic year kicks off across Washington State, the emphasis on ensuring the safety of students is paramount. With the return of school buses to the roads, the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) has released findings from a recent survey that underscores the critical need for compliance with the state's school bus stop laws.

According to the survey, conducted by NASDPTS, 101,334 school bus drivers from 40 states, including 3,419 in Washington, participated. The focus of the survey was on illegal passes by drivers when school buses are stopped to load or unload students. In Washington alone, during a one-day survey period, school bus drivers documented 960 illegal passes.

If this one-day count were to be replicated across the entire 180-day school year, it would result in over 172,000 violations, as noted by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). Washington state law mandates that all drivers must come to a complete stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights or a retractable stop sign.

On two-lane roads, drivers traveling in both directions are required to stop. However, on roads with three or more marked lanes, the requirement to stop applies only to drivers traveling in the opposite direction. Exceptions are made for highways divided into separate roadways, where drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus must still adhere to the stop requirement.

The consequences for failing to stop for a stopped school bus are severe. Drivers who violate this law face a mandatory $500 fine, with no possibility of the fine being waived, reduced, or suspended. The message is clear: the safety of students is non-negotiable.

As the school year progresses, it is crucial for all drivers to be vigilant and aware of the presence of school buses. The Gastonia Police Department, among other law enforcement agencies, is reminding drivers to exercise caution and adhere to the law.

The NASDPTS survey not only highlights the need for compliance with school bus stop laws but also serves as a call to action for communities to support initiatives that promote road safety. The survey's findings underscore the importance of education and awareness campaigns to ensure that drivers understand the risks associated with illegal passing of stopped school buses.

In addition to the legal and financial penalties, the consequences of illegal passing can be devastating. The lives of children depend on the vigilance of drivers to adhere to the law and the safety measures put in place to protect them.

As the 2026 school year unfolds, it is a reminder for all to take responsibility for the safety of our youth. Whether driving in a school zone or passing a school bus, the choice to stop is not just a legal requirement; it is a commitment to the future.

Washington State is taking proactive steps to enforce the law and educate the public about the importance of stopping for school buses. It is a collective responsibility that extends beyond the classroom and into the daily lives of drivers across the state.

In conclusion, as students across Washington prepare for another year of learning, it is essential that all drivers recognize the significance of stopping for school buses. The NASDPTS survey serves as a crucial reminder of the law and the safety implications of illegal passing. The safety of our children is a priority that must be upheld by every driver on the road.
