Virginia Governor Spanberger Restores Voting Rights and Commemorates 1963 March on Washington

Governor Abigail Spanberger of Virginia stood at the Lincoln Memorial last Friday to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington. During her speech, she highlighted the ongoing struggle for civil rights and voting rights in the United States, emphasizing the importance of restoring voting rights for all eligible citizens.

Spanberger announced that her administration had restored the voting rights of 100,000 formerly-incarcerated residents of Virginia. This action comes as part of a broader effort to ensure that every eligible resident can participate in the democratic process. "The right to vote is about more than a ballot — it is about whether we believe every person should have a voice in our democracy," Spanberger said.

Virginia is one of only three states that permanently strips voting rights from citizens with felony convictions. Spanberger's administration has been working to change this, having previously restored the voting rights of 66,000 Virginians. "The Governor has the sole discretion over whether the restoration process is transparent or done behind closed doors," she said. "Whether it is easy to apply or deliberately complicated."

Spanberger's speech was a powerful reminder of the state's complex history with civil rights. She mentioned the Freedom Riders' first stop in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and the birth of civil rights leader Dorothy Height in Richmond. "This history continues today," she said. "In just the last few years alone, the United States Supreme Court has dismantled so many of the protections provided by the Voting Rights Act."

Spanberger also criticized the current administration's efforts to undermine American democracy. "And we have a President — and a complicit Congress — who have used those lies to justify his efforts to undermine the basic machinery of American democracy and keep Americans from voting," she said.

Despite the progress made in Virginia, Spanberger acknowledged that the struggle for voting rights is far from over. "Despite all the wonderful progress we've made, this struggle is not over. The work is not done," she said.

Spanberger's announcement of the voting rights restoration was met with praise from civil rights groups. "This is a significant step forward for Virginia and for the nation," said one group leader. "Governor Spanberger's actions will help ensure that all Virginians have the opportunity to participate in our democracy."

Spanberger's speech was a powerful reminder of the importance of voting rights and the ongoing struggle for civil rights in the United States. Her efforts to restore voting rights for all eligible citizens are a testament to her commitment to ensuring that every voice is heard in the democratic process.
