Federal Agents Search Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington Home as DOJ Confirms Court-Approved Warrant

Federal law enforcement agents searched the Washington, D.C. residence of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., on Monday morning, an operation that the Department of Justice confirmed was carried out under a judicially authorized warrant.

In a statement provided to NPR, the Justice Department said agents with Homeland Security Investigations executed the search as part of what it described as an "ongoing federal investigation." The department said the warrant had been approved by the DOJ, but officials declined to provide any further information about the nature of the probe or what agents were seeking.

The search represents a significant escalation in the scrutiny surrounding the congresswoman, who has represented Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District since 2019 and has long been a prominent figure in national Democratic politics. The timing of the operation, coming just weeks before next month's midterm elections, adds a layer of political sensitivity to an already charged situation.

Omar responded quickly on social media, characterizing the search as a politically motivated attack. "Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement," she posted. "I will not be silenced."

The congresswoman's office echoed that sentiment in stronger terms. Jackie Rogers, a spokesperson for Omar, described the operation as a "raid" and called it an "outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies."

Neither the Justice Department nor Homeland Security Investigations has publicly addressed the specific allegations or the evidence that might have supported the warrant application. Court records related to the search were not immediately available, and it remained unclear whether any materials were removed from the residence or whether any charges are anticipated.

Visual evidence from the scene showed multiple HSI agents moving near and around Omar's home throughout the morning. A photograph captured one agent getting into a car outside the residence, while another showed agents walking away from the property. The presence of a large vehicle at the scene was noted by at least one neighbor.

Sharon Jackson, a 79-year-old resident who lives directly across the street from Omar, said federal agents woke her around 4:30 a.m. Monday. "I got awakened by boom, boom, boom," Jackson recalled. "They were out here with a great big truck." Her account suggests the operation involved a substantial law enforcement footprint and began in the pre-dawn hours.

The search unfolded against the backdrop of an intensified national debate over the use of federal law enforcement powers against elected officials. In recent years, figures across the political spectrum have accused administrations of both parties of targeting opponents through prosecutorial and investigative actions, though concrete evidence of such targeting has often been disputed.

Vice President Vance has previously alleged that Omar committed immigration fraud, a claim the congresswoman has consistently denied. It was not immediately clear whether that allegation is connected to the federal investigation referenced by the Justice Department. No formal charges related to immigration matters have been filed against Omar.

Omar is seeking reelection in next month's midterms, and the search of her home is likely to become an immediate flashpoint in her campaign and in broader national political discourse. Supporters may view the operation as confirmation of her claims of political persecution, while critics could argue that a court-approved warrant indicates sufficient evidence existed to justify judicial authorization.

Legal experts note that obtaining a search warrant requires law enforcement to demonstrate probable cause to a judge, a standard that provides some independent oversight of investigative decisions. However, the sealed nature of many federal investigations means the public often cannot evaluate the basis for such actions until charges are filed or documents are unsealed.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees HSI, has not issued a separate statement about the operation. HSI typically handles investigations involving immigration violations, customs offenses, human trafficking, and transnational crime, though its jurisdiction can extend to other federal matters.

Whether the search will result in charges, further investigative steps, or remain an isolated event remains unknown. The Justice Department's characterization of an "ongoing" investigation suggests that the inquiry is not complete and that additional developments could follow.

For now, the search has injected a new element of uncertainty into a closely watched congressional race and renewed questions about the intersection of federal law enforcement and electoral politics. Omar's public response signals that she intends to frame the investigation as an attack on her constituents and her political voice, setting up a potentially protracted conflict between her office and federal authorities.
