Three Dead in Chatsworth News Helicopter Crash Near Earlier Fatal Metro Bus Wreck

Tragedy struck the San Fernando Valley on Tuesday evening when a local television news helicopter crashed between two commercial buildings in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles, claiming the lives of three people. The aircraft was actively engaged in providing live aerial reporting of an earlier fatal collision involving a municipal transit bus when it suddenly plummeted, compounding an already devastating afternoon for the city.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched shortly before 7 p.m. to reports of an aircraft down in the 9100 block of North Mason Avenue. The forceful impact triggered an intense fire that quickly spread to nearby property, causing extensive damage to four vehicles and two large storage containers positioned between the commercial structures before firefighters could fully suppress the blaze.

The aircraft was officially identified later in the evening as NewsChopper4, a dedicated newsgathering helicopter operated by Angel City Air on behalf of local television stations NBC4 and Telemundo 52. Station management confirmed the aircraft's identity shortly before 9 p.m., acknowledging that their team had been tracking breaking news developments in the region when the fatal incident occurred.

Station officials confirmed that longtime aerial journalist Eliana Moreno was aboard the helicopter when the aircraft went down. Moreno, widely recognized for her veteran airborne reporting across Southern California, was in the skies fulfilling her journalistic duties as newsrooms and viewers across the greater Los Angeles area expressed profound sorrow over the news.

First responders faced an exceptionally difficult scene upon arriving at the crash site, encountering severely scattered and charred debris. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Captain Branden Silverman told reporters that the helicopter was pretty well destroyed on impact, explaining that search teams were forced to carefully sift through the remaining rubble to determine the full extent of casualties and confirm the aircraft's specific markings.

Fire officials noted that one of the victims was discovered outside the helicopter following the crash, illustrating the severe force of the impact. Emergency medical personnel transported one individual from the scene to a nearby hospital, while emergency crews continued working into the night to determine the exact number of occupants who were inside the cabin when it crashed.

In a joint statement issued after the tragedy, leadership at NBC4 and Telemundo 52 expressed their profound sadness regarding the loss of life. The broadcast stations extended their deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and professional colleagues of those who lost their lives in the fatal aviation accident while serving the public.

Federal safety officials have launched an official inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fatal flight. The National Transportation Safety Board stated that an investigator was scheduled to arrive at the Chatsworth scene on Wednesday morning to inspect the wreckage, collect physical evidence, and begin the exhaustive process of determining what caused the aircraft to crash.

The helicopter accident occurred approximately two hours after another catastrophic emergency took place just miles away in the same community. Shortly after 5 p.m., a severe collision occurred at the intersection of West Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue, where a passenger vehicle slammed into the side of a Los Angeles Metro bus.

That initial street collision caused widespread damage, trapping several individuals inside the vehicles and triggering a massive rescue operation by the Los Angeles Fire Department. First responders worked to extricate trapped victims and transported six people to area hospitals to receive treatment for various injuries sustained during the crash.

The bus collision resulted in severe casualties, with emergency officials initially reporting at least two deaths at the scene. Officials with the Metro transit agency later provided an updated fatality assessment to CBS Los Angeles, indicating that a total of three people had died in connection with the severe collision.

The severity of the transit accident prompted significant media interest, drawing several television news helicopters into the airspace above Chatsworth to broadcast live video of the emergency operations below. NewsChopper4 was among the aerial news crews monitoring the scene when the helicopter went down between the commercial buildings on Mason Avenue.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass arrived at the scene on Tuesday night, joining public safety officials to address the media during a press briefing. The mayor expressed that she was absolutely devastated by the substantial loss of life resulting from the two separate crashes, reflecting on the profound grief affecting the entire metropolitan community.

Mayor Bass emphasized the cumulative heartbreak of the day's events, noting that Los Angeles had lost five Angelenos in the span of only a few hours across the two incidents. She reiterated that her thoughts and prayers were centered first and foremost on the grieving families, loved ones, and friends of all the victims who perished.

California Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a statement offering his condolences to the affected families and organizations following the twin tragedies. The governor expressed that the state's hearts were with the victims and families of both the Metro bus and helicopter crashes, offering support to the entire NBC4 family and expressing gratitude to the first responders on the front lines.
