When Waneisha Hadley first walked into the Animal Care Center of Tupelo nearly fifteen years ago, she brought an abundance of interpersonal skills but virtually no background in veterinary medicine or animal care. Today, she serves as the clinic’s reception manager and customer service representative, functioning as a vital link between worried pet owners and the medical team tasked with caring for their four-legged companions.

Hadley’s unexpected path to the veterinary field began while she was employed at a local children's daycare center. During her time there, Dr. Kelly Kirkpatrick, who owned the Animal Care Center at the time, enrolled her children in the facility. Kirkpatrick witnessed Hadley deftly managing a challenging situation at the daycare, and the veterinarian was so impressed by Hadley's calm demeanor and communication skills that she quickly extended a job offer at the clinic.

Accepting the role required a massive leap of faith for Hadley, who had never owned a household pet. Stepping into a clinical setting without any prior exposure to animal terminology presented an immediate hurdle, as she found herself needing to learn everything from basic behavioral traits to clinical nomenclature, having only known cats and dogs rather than the formal designations of feline and canine.

The initial transition proved emotionally taxing for the newcomer. During her early training sessions, some coworkers demonstrated little patience with her lack of veterinary familiarity. Hadley frequently returned home in tears, questioning her capabilities and privately worrying that she would not be able to survive or succeed in such a demanding environment.

Despite those initial anxieties and self-doubts, Hadley persisted and gradually mastered the intricate operational demands of the front desk. Her dedication enabled her to transform an unfamiliar job into a long-lasting career, proving that foundational customer service and genuine empathy can bridge any initial technical knowledge gap.

While Hadley still does not maintain pets in her own household, she has developed an encyclopedic knowledge of the clinic’s diverse animal clientele. She readily recognizes the faces and remembers the names of the numerous dogs and cats that arrive for appointments at the practice, which is now owned and operated by Dr. Shelley Key-Russell.

Her connection to the clinic's four-legged patients has even extended beyond normal business hours into occasional pet-sitting duties. Hadley frequently cares for households with multiple animals, a stark contrast to her pet-free upbringing that now finds her sharing sleeping quarters with the very creatures she once knew little about.

Throughout her daily duties, Hadley relies on the Golden Rule as her primary professional standard, striving to treat every visiting client with the respect and consideration she would hope to receive. Understanding that visits to a veterinary clinic can often be stressful, her goal is to ensure that owners feel supported and comforted from the moment they check in until they depart, beginning each morning with a prayer to serve as a positive light in the lives of others.

The supportive environment fostered within the practice has played an instrumental role in Hadley's long tenure. As a single mother, she has expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Key-Russell’s compassionate leadership and flexibility, which provided crucial understanding and stability as Hadley balanced the demands of her career and home life.

Hadley poured that same dedication into raising her daughter, R'reanna Bobo. Now 23 years old, Bobo graduated from Mississippi College and has continued her higher education by pursuing a master's degree at Delta State University, marking a major milestone for the family.

When Bobo initially departed their home in Belden to begin her collegiate studies, Hadley experienced a difficult period of empty nest syndrome. Seeking community and purpose during the transition, she found fellowship and encouragement at The Sycamore Church, where she ultimately integrated into the congregation and joined the praise and worship team as a vocalist.

Her willingness to embrace personal growth surfaced prominently in 2022 when she agreed to participate in "Dancing with the King," a prominent local charity event. Although Hadley describes herself as naturally shy and typically uncomfortable in front of large crowds, she chose to push through her apprehensions to support the community initiative.

The commitment required substantial physical dedication, including eight consecutive weeks of dance training every Friday evening that often left her relying on Epsom salt baths to recover from the rigorous rehearsals. The annual event, organized by the Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club, raises essential funding to provide scholarships for local youth pursuing voice and dance instruction.

Hadley’s community-minded effort culminated in widespread recognition when she was named both the People's Choice winner and the overall Grand Champion of the competition. Of the $42,000 generated by the event, Hadley raised $12,348 on her own, bolstered by generous sponsorships and enthusiastic backing from the clinic’s loyal clients.

For Hadley, the practice represents far more than an ordinary workplace, serving as a tight-knit second home where staff members collaborate closely and uplift one another. She credits Dr. Key-Russell with continually pushing the team toward professional excellence, challenging her staff while offering unwavering confidence in their individual abilities.

Looking back on a journey that started in a daycare classroom, Hadley has established herself as a beloved cornerstone of the Tupelo veterinary community. Her journey underscores how empathy, perseverance, and strong community relationships can transform unfamiliar challenges into an enduring, impactful career.
