The Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing to celebrate the region’s agricultural heritage and local culinary talent with the return of its annual Field to Fork gathering on Thursday, Sept. 17. Organized by the chamber’s dedicated Ag Committee, the evening aims to unite food enthusiasts, agricultural producers, and local artisans for a wide-ranging culinary showcase.
Scheduled to run from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Brown County Fairgrounds Clubhouse, the gathering offers community members a relaxed setting to unwind after the workday. Admission to the celebration is set at $50 per ticket, which includes access to an evening of food, musical entertainment, and social engagement. Organizers request that attendees register beforehand by phone or through the chamber’s website to ensure accurate portion planning.
This year's edition carries special significance by aligning its program with the 250th anniversary of the United States. Operating under the official banner of "1776 – 2026; Fresh. Local. Unforgettable," the event is designed as a late-summer celebration of the seasonal goods and farm-fresh ingredients gathered from regional producers and local farmers markets.
Gail Linde, IOM, who serves as the chief executive officer of the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the community aspect behind the culinary showcase. Linde noted that the evening honors not only the quality of locally sourced ingredients but also the dedicated farmers, ranchers, and culinary artists who transform those raw harvests into finished dining experiences.
The menu for the evening has been crafted to connect regional agricultural history with the nation's broader culinary journey. Guests will have the opportunity to taste a variety of South Dakota-centric dishes, including locally raised bison, pheasant specialties, and traditional German sausage that together reflect the enduring heritage and cultural background of the surrounding area.
Organizers designed the tasting experience so that attendees can move through an assortment of food stations at their own pace. Guests will be invited to sample small salads, light appetizers, and rich entrees, complemented by selections of wine and regionally produced craft beverages, while interacting directly with the individuals responsible for bringing the dishes to life.
A standout feature of this year’s beverage offerings comes courtesy of One Legged Pheasant, an Aberdeen-based craft brewery. The local business will be pouring two distinct selections for attendees, headlined by a brand-new, one-off German lager named the Maltese Helles Bock.
The ingredients behind the specialty brew emphasize regional agriculture, relying on grains native to the Upper Midwest. Ryan Clay, the owner and brewer at One Legged Pheasant, collaborated with regional partner Two Track Malting to supply the grains essential for crafting the lager’s specific flavor profile.
Two Track Malting brought recognized expertise to the brewing process, having secured a Gold Medal at the Craft Maltsters Guild annual Malt Cup earlier this year. Clay noted that incorporating their award-winning malt into the new beer added a special dimension to the project, praising the company's commitment to high standards.
Described as a malt-forward brew with a crisp, clean finish, the Maltese Helles Bock registers at roughly 6% alcohol by volume. According to Clay, this balance ensures the lager possesses sufficient body and flavor without being overly heavy or overpowering for guests sampling multiple food pairings throughout the evening.
Alongside the newly debuted lager, One Legged Pheasant will also serve Little Stargazer, a West Coast hazy pale ale. The dual craft beer offerings serve as an example of how local brewers and malt producers collaborate to showcase Upper Midwest agriculture through modern craft beverages.
In addition to the culinary and beverage tastings, the Field to Fork evening serves as the backdrop for a major community milestone: the presentation of the 2026 Farm Family of the Year. This annual award honors local agricultural leaders who demonstrate excellence in their farming operations alongside an active dedication to civic engagement.
The award program continues a tradition of acknowledging exceptional local producers, such as the previous year's honoree, the Erdmann Angus Ranch. The ranch was recognized for combining sharp agricultural acumen with a lasting commitment to supporting and giving back to the wider Aberdeen community.
Linde credited the success and sustainability of the annual gathering to the tireless commitment of the chamber's Ag Committee volunteers. She emphasized that the committee works throughout the entire year to coordinate logistics, curate recipes, and secure partnerships, making the positive feedback and satisfaction of attendees worthwhile.
With its blend of locally sourced meats, specialty craft brews, live music, and civic honors, the event is positioned as an open invitation for families, couples, and individuals to celebrate regional food traditions. Prospective attendees are encouraged to secure their reservations via the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce platform ahead of the Sept. 17 gathering.
