A tragic shooting incident at a rave in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau has left one person dead and five others injured. The incident, which occurred early Sunday morning, has sent shockwaves through the community as authorities continue to search for the suspect.
Local police and media reported that the shooting happened at the "Aarau Rave VOL. 7" event, taking place at the horse racing track in Aarau's Schachen district. The cantonal police confirmed that a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while four men and one woman, aged between 24 and 27, were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to severe.
Despite Switzerland's reputation for relatively widespread gun ownership, public shootings are rare in the Alpine country. The authorities were alerted to the incident around 2:30 a.m. in the canton's capital, Aarau, which is located 29 miles west of Zurich. At the time of the shooting, the fire department cordoned off a large area around the site, and a major police operation was underway.
The public was advised to stay away from the area as officers, firefighters, and ambulances responded in large numbers. Police in Freiburg, Germany, also participated in the search efforts for the suspect, as reported by the German news agency dpa.
Witnesses at the scene initially mistook the shots for fireworks before someone shouted "everyone down." The shooting reportedly occurred right after the event ended, and police later took all remaining visitors to a nearby gym, according to Swiss daily Blick.
The Aargau Racing Club, which runs the horse racing track, expressed its shock and sympathy to those affected. "We extend our deepest sympathy to all those affected and their families, who are facing this difficult and trying situation," the club said on its website. "We would like to thank the emergency responders and all others involved who worked professionally and with dedication on the scene."
Swiss DJ Tekibo, who performed at the rave, took to Instagram to express his horror at the events. "Techno and raves are supposed to be a place for freedom and safety, never a place where something like this happens," he wrote.
The cantonal police have called for any witnesses with videos or photos of the incident to share them with investigators. The search for the unknown perpetrator is ongoing, and police have not yet disclosed possible motives or the exact circumstances of the crime.
As the community grapples with the tragedy, the incident has sparked discussions about safety at large public events and the need for stricter security measures. The Swiss government has offered its condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that it is taking steps to ensure the safety of all citizens.
