Youngstown Community Remembers Longtime Resident and GREIF Co. Retiree Richard Keleman

The Mahoning Valley community is reflecting on the life and enduring legacy of Richard Keleman, a lifelong Youngstown resident and dedicated industrial worker who passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the age of 84. His passing marks the close of a life defined by steady labor, community connection, and close ties to family and friends throughout northeastern Ohio.

Born in Youngstown on February 4, 1942, Keleman was the son of Charles Keleman and Helen Nagy Keleman. Raised in an era when the industrial heart of the Mahoning Valley was bustling with activity, he developed a strong sense of work ethic and grounded local values that remained with him throughout his entire life.

Growing up in mid-twentieth-century Youngstown placed Keleman amidst a culture of perseverance and close-knit neighborhood communities. Like many members of his generation, he committed himself to the local manufacturing and industrial sector, building a stable life through steady, hands-on employment that contributed directly to the regional economy.

Keleman spent decades working as a general laborer at the GREIF Co., a prominent industrial packaging and container manufacturing enterprise. Colleagues and industry observers often note that the general labor workforce represents the backbone of such industrial operations, requiring reliable day-to-day discipline, physical endurance, and teamwork. Keleman served the company faithfully until his well-earned retirement in 1999.

Following his retirement at the close of the twentieth century, Keleman transitioned into a peaceful, active routine centered around the simple pleasures of everyday life. Rather than stepping back from public life, he remained an active and recognizable presence within his local community, cultivating habits that kept him connected to his surroundings.

Among his favorite daily activities was his regular morning trip to the local McDonald’s, where he enjoyed familiar meals, casual conversations, and the welcoming atmosphere of the neighborhood establishment. For many retirees, such daily visits serve as meaningful community touchpoints that foster social connection and routine.

In addition to his dining routine, Keleman maintained an active lifestyle by regularly walking in local parks. Outdoor walking routines are widely regarded by health and wellness experts as an essential practice for lifelong physical health, mental clarity, and appreciation of the natural beauty of the local park systems that dot the Mahoning Valley landscape.

Beyond his daily outings, Keleman cherished the meaningful relationships he formed over the years. His life was significantly enriched by the companionship of his special friends, Craig and Jason, whose camaraderie and support provided ongoing warmth and shared memories throughout his later years.

Keleman’s life was deeply rooted in his extended family. He is survived by his beloved sister, Donna Smith, who remains a cherished pillar of the family. He also leaves behind an extensive circle of loved ones, including numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom carry forward his memory and values.

Throughout his long life, Keleman also experienced the profound grief of losing close family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Helen, as well as his sisters, Dolores Vona and Francis Milick, and his brother, Charles Keleman, all of whom held significant places in the family’s shared history.

Arrangements to honor and celebrate Keleman’s life have been scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2026. Family, friends, and community members will gather for calling hours from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, located at 4442 South Avenue in Boardman, Ohio. A formal funeral service will follow immediately at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home chapel.

In accordance with local remembrance traditions, well-wishers and acquaintances who wish to express their condolences, share personal memories, or offer prayers for the grieving family are invited to visit the online Book of Memories hosted on the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home website.

In tribute to his standing as a long-standing Mahoning Valley native, a special television memorial broadcast will be televised across several regional stations on Friday, September 11, 2026. Viewers will be able to watch the tribute during morning and evening programming, starting at approximately 6:47 a.m. on WYTV, followed by an appearance at 9:43 a.m. on WKBN, 10:58 a.m. on FOX, and concluding at 8:12 p.m. on MyYTV.

As relatives, friends, and former co-workers prepare to bid their final farewells, Richard Keleman is remembered as a quiet, steadfast figure whose dedication to his work, love for his family, and appreciation for everyday moments left an indelible imprint on the Youngstown community he called home for eighty-four years.
