TxDOT Permanently Closes Busy Eastbound I-10 Ramp Near La Cantera for Loop 1604 Expansion

Commuters traveling throughout northwest San Antonio, Texas, are facing major adjustments to their regular driving routines as state transportation officials move forward with the permanent removal of a critical interstate access point. Beginning at 5 a.m. on Monday, September 14, the Texas Department of Transportation is permanently shutting down the eastbound Interstate 10 entrance ramp located immediately south of the Loop 1604 interchange.

The permanent decommissioning of this vital access ramp is expected to generate significant traffic congestion and travel delays across this heavily traveled corridor. Transportation authorities warn that motorists traveling near prominent local commercial and educational hubs, including The Rim shopping center and the University of Texas at San Antonio, should prepare for roadway delays that could persist for months.

The ramp shutdown represents a necessary step to facilitate long-term infrastructure modernization across the busy northwest sector. According to an official press release distributed by the Texas Department of Transportation, widely known as TxDOT, the agency determined that closing this specific ramp is required so construction crews can safely and efficiently complete upcoming roadway improvements in the area.

Drivers navigating near regional shopping destinations, such as visitors and workers departing from The Shops at La Cantera or travelers heading in the direction of UTSA Boulevard, are expected to feel the direct effects of the closure. To help offset these long-term disruptions and restore access, TxDOT announced that it expects to open a newly constructed exit ramp later this year.

Until the new roadway configurations are completed and opened to traffic, state transportation planners have established multiple designated detour routes to guide motorists around the construction zone. Commuters are advised to familiarize themselves with the alternative paths and allow plenty of extra travel time when moving through the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange area.

For motorists traveling on the eastbound I-10 frontage road, TxDOT instructs drivers to remain on the service road rather than attempting an early merge. These drivers must continue forward through both the UTSA Boulevard and Hausman Road intersections before entering the main lanes of eastbound I-10 via the entrance ramp located south of Hausman Road.

A more detailed detour has been outlined for drivers attempting to reach eastbound I-10 from the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road. The state transportation agency advises these motorists to take the eastbound-to-westbound Loop 1604 U-turn at the I-10 interchange, which places vehicles onto the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road.

Once traveling along the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road, motorists must continue until reaching the U-turn at Kyle Seale Parkway. After using the turnaround to enter the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road, drivers can take the first available entrance ramp onto the eastbound Loop 1604 main lanes and stay to the right to access eastbound I-10 via the flyover ramp.

A third alternative route has been arranged for commuters who are seeking to travel from westbound Loop 1604 onto eastbound I-10. For this route, TxDOT recommends that drivers follow the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road through the I-10 interchange and continue onward to make the U-turn at Northwest Military Highway.

After completing the U-turn at Northwest Military Highway, vehicles will merge onto the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road. From that point, motorists must use the first entrance ramp to access the westbound Loop 1604 main lanes and remain in the right lane to take the dedicated flyover ramp directly onto eastbound I-10.

This week's permanent ramp closure is an integral component of the ongoing Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. This extensive $1.4 billion infrastructure initiative encompasses comprehensive roadway improvements covering 23 miles of highway, stretching from State Highway 16, also known as Bandera Road, all the way to Interstate 35.

According to TxDOT, the overarching mission of the multi-billion-dollar corridor overhaul is to increase overall mobility, reduce persistent traffic congestion, and enhance driver safety on what is recognized as one of the most heavily congested transportation corridors in the state of Texas.

The extensive construction work is categorized by the Texas Transportation Commission as part of the broader Texas Clear Lanes initiative. This statewide program was established to prioritize funding and execute major highway improvements along the state’s most severely congested traffic bottlenecks.

While the permanent closure of the eastbound I-10 entrance ramp near La Cantera and UTSA brings immediate travel challenges to San Antonio drivers, it represents steady progress for the broader regional overhaul. TxDOT officials currently estimate that the entire Loop 1604 North Expansion Project will reach final completion in 2028.
