North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival to Return to Orange, Celebrating Community and Culture

Orange, Massachusetts, is gearing up to host the 29th annual North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival, affectionately known as the "Festival that Stinks," set for September 26-27. This unique event is not just a celebration of garlic but also a showcase of local talent, art, and culture, offering families and art enthusiasts an engaging weekend experience amidst the picturesque fall foliage.

The festival, which has become a staple in the region, will be held on a historic farm in Orange. Attendees can look forward to a weekend filled with local food, art, music, and hands-on activities for all ages. With over 100 exhibitors expected to participate, the festival promises a diverse array of offerings ranging from farm-fresh produce and garlic-inspired cuisine to healing arts and handmade crafts.

Three stages will be set up to feature live music, spoken word performances, and chef demonstrations, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy. Families can also take advantage of a free kids' art-making tent and garlic-themed games, while local living workshops, electric vehicle displays, and sustainability exhibits will highlight eco-friendly practices and community engagement.

This year's theme, "Hope Grows Here," aims to celebrate the festival's significant impact on the local community and environment. Over the past 28 years, the festival has contributed $5 million to support local artists, farmers, food producers, and performers, underscoring its commitment to the community's economic and environmental well-being.

Organizers are proud of the festival's sustainability efforts. On average, only two bags of trash are generated for the 8,000 attendees, and over 4,000 bags of waste have been kept out of landfills. Additionally, food waste is transformed into compost, which is used to fill 500 garden beds, further emphasizing the event's dedication to environmental responsibility.

The festival also provides financial support to local organizations. Over 40 environmental, arts, food security, and wellness organizations have received a total of $75,000 in festival grants to address regional needs. This support is a testament to the festival's mission of fostering community growth and development.

Volunteerism plays a crucial role in the success of the North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival. Organized by a committee of friends and neighbors, the festival relies on the efforts of approximately 200 volunteers to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all attendees. This year, organizers are encouraging community members to sign up for volunteer shifts, offering a variety of tasks that allow participants to get involved and contribute to the festival's success.

Admission to the festival is affordable, with general tickets priced at $10 for the weekend. Discounted tickets are available for students, seniors, and Card to Culture participants, while children 12 and under can attend for free. Tickets can be purchased online starting September 1 at garlicandarts.org.

Service animals are welcome at the festival, but pets are not allowed. Organizers are excited about the upcoming event and are looking forward to welcoming the community for another memorable weekend of celebration, art, and garlic.

The North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival is organized by an all-volunteer committee and supported by the nonprofit fiscal sponsor Common Good. This year's event is a testament to the power of community and the positive impact that festivals can have on local economies and environments.
