The competitive grocery landscape in the Southwest is experiencing another major wave of retail growth as Sprouts Farmers Market prepares to launch four new supermarket locations across Arizona before the close of 2026. The Phoenix-based grocer is simultaneously executing an extensive nationwide growth strategy, with plans to debut 20 additional storefronts throughout the country over the final months of the year.
The expansion comes during an extraordinarily busy year for supermarket development across the Valley. Throughout 2026, grocery brands have been aggressively establishing and expanding their regional footprints. Major retail competitors and specialty chains—including Buc-ee's, Seafood City, Aldi, and Trader Joe's—have continued to build out new stores to capture rising consumer demand in Arizona communities.
Amid this heightened regional activity, Sprouts is reinforcing its presence in the state where its modern identity took root. While the chain originated in Chandler and maintains its corporate headquarters in Phoenix, its brand history is rooted in decades of family-run agricultural commerce.
The origins of the business trace back to 1943, when Henry Boney launched a small, fresh fruit stand in San Diego, California. Over the subsequent decades, that initial venture laid the groundwork for open-air farmers markets and community-focused neighborhood food stores operated by the Boney family.
In 2002, members of the Boney family officially established the first Sprouts Farmers Market, transforming their heritage of open-air produce marketing into a specialized, full-service grocery model. Since then, the concept has developed from a local Southwestern grocer into a recognized national chain operating across numerous states.
Alongside its retail store expansion, Sprouts is also executing major corporate infrastructure changes within its home market. The company is relocating its headquarters in 2026 to CityNorth, an expansive mixed-use development situated at Loop 101 and 56th Street in north Phoenix.
The CityNorth commercial center, managed by Crown Realty Group, is poised to become a central hub for the company. In addition to housing Sprouts' new executive headquarters, the development features a newly built flagship grocery store and two accompanying restaurant spaces. The broader CityNorth project has seen substantial momentum throughout 2026, with waste management giant Republic Services having moved its corporate headquarters to the site in January, while a dual-branded AC by Marriott and Element hotel is scheduled to open in early 2027.
In Arizona, Sprouts' upcoming openings will be distributed across the Phoenix metropolitan area and southern Arizona, beginning with an East Valley debut in September. The first of the four state locations is scheduled to welcome shoppers on September 18 at 5131 South Ellsworth Road in Mesa.
The following month will see two simultaneous store openings on October 30. One of these locations will serve Maricopa County at 1480 North Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale, while the other will expand the brand's presence in Pima County at 10015 East Old Vail Road in Tucson.
The fourth Arizona location will bring a second new store to Mesa before the end of the year. That facility, located at 1110 West Southern Avenue, is scheduled to host its grand opening on November 7, completing the chain's planned in-state retail additions for 2026.
Outside of its home state, the grocer's late-year campaign encompasses 20 additional store launches spanning diverse geographic regions, including California, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee.
The national rollout commenced in early September with multiple simultaneous openings on September 4, including stores in Tracy, California, on Ellis Town Drive; Hartsdale, New York, on North Central Avenue; and East Windsor, New Jersey, along Princeton Hightstown Road. These were quickly followed on September 10 by new storefronts in Sewell, New Jersey, on Egg Harbor Road, and in Spring, Texas, serving The Woodlands community on West Panther Creek Drive.
As September progressed, Sprouts opened additional locations on September 18 in Carson, California, on East University Drive, alongside the Mesa opening. The final week of the month brought grand openings on September 25 in Arlington, Virginia, along Langston Boulevard, and in College Station, Texas, on Texas Avenue South.
The grocer's momentum carries steadily into October with an array of mid-Atlantic, Southern, and Western openings. Early October additions scheduled for October 2 include a store in Limerick, Pennsylvania, on West Ridge Pike, and a location in San Diego, California, on El Cajon Boulevard, returning the company to the city where Henry Boney began selling produce more than eight decades ago.
Later in October, Sprouts will open three stores on October 16: two in Georgia—situated in Newnan on Millard Farmer Industrial Boulevard and in Conyers along Highway 138 Southeast—and one in Bedford, Texas, on North Industrial Boulevard. The schedule also includes an October 23 opening planned for Clarksville, Tennessee.
Through this coordinated slate of openings, Sprouts Farmers Market is substantially expanding its market density across both established Southwestern markets and high-growth national corridors. The twin initiatives of establishing a new corporate campus at CityNorth and rolling out two dozen stores nationwide underscore the chain's robust growth trajectory through the end of 2026.
