Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Maricopa County in Arizona

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Maricopa County, located in south central Arizona, effective until 9 p.m. MST. The warning follows the detection of a severe thunderstorm over Painted Rock Dam, positioned approximately 18 miles north of Gila Bend, which is currently moving northeast at a speed of 10 mph.

In addition to the warning for Maricopa County, the NWS has also issued a flash flood warning for Pinal County, situated in southeastern Arizona. The flash flood warning is set to remain in effect until 12:45 a.m. MST. According to the latest Doppler radar data, thunderstorms in the warned area are producing heavy rainfall, with between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain already falling. Further rainfall of up to 1 inch is anticipated, potentially leading to flash flooding in the region.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has been closely monitoring the situation, with meteorologists noting the severe thunderstorm's location near Wenden, around 29 miles south of Alamo Lake, and its movement northeast at a speed of 15 mph. This storm poses a significant threat due to its potential to produce damaging winds and large hail.

Thunderstorms are a common occurrence in Arizona, particularly during the monsoon season, which spans from June 15 to September 30. This season is marked by intense heat, surges of moisture, and atmospheric instability, creating ideal conditions for the formation of storms, often in the afternoon.

While the monsoon is the peak period for such storms, they can occur throughout the year. These storms can vary in intensity and duration, ranging from brief, localized downpours to those that unleash strong winds, vivid lightning, and torrential rains.

A severe thunderstorm warning is issued when the area is expected to experience storms with winds of 58 mph or higher, and/or hail one inch in diameter or larger. Such warnings are taken seriously as they indicate a significant risk to life and property.

To stay safe during thunderstorms in Arizona, it is advisable to seek shelter indoors at the first sound of thunder, as lightning strikes can occur miles away from the parent storm. Resuming outdoor activities should only be done 30 minutes after the storm has passed. It is also crucial to avoid electronics, plumbing, and windows, and to bring pets inside. In the event of time, securing loose objects outside is recommended to prevent them from becoming dangerous flying debris in high winds.

The 2026 monsoon season has presented a mix of extreme weather conditions, from intense heat waves to heavy downpours. Metro Phoenix, in particular, has experienced a range of weather phenomena, including dust storms, soaring temperatures, and significant rainfall.

As the season progresses, residents and visitors alike are reminded to stay informed about weather conditions and to take necessary precautions to ensure safety. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed, ensuring that the public is kept informed about potential dangers and necessary preparations.
