New York Public Schools Place Eighth Nationally in Comprehensive Education Study as Spending Leads the Nation

New York has secured a place among the top ten public school systems in the United States, finishing in eighth place nationwide according to a detailed comparative report published by the personal finance platform WalletHub. The evaluation examined the strength of educational systems across the country by measuring factors ranging from academic performance and educational quality to financial funding and student safety.

While the state captured a respectable top-ten finish overall, the underlying data highlights a notable contrast between the state’s massive financial commitment and its relative performance in key operational categories. Most prominently, New York ranked as the number one state in the entire country for school spending, yet it landed significantly lower on measures tied to overall education quality and school environment.

In the final assessment, New York accumulated an overall score of 59.52 out of a possible 100 points, cementing its eighth-place standing. WalletHub’s comprehensive study evaluated all 50 states alongside the District of Columbia, putting each jurisdiction through an assessment consisting of 32 key metrics designed to identify the nation's strongest public education frameworks.

The findings underscore a longstanding conversation in educational policy regarding the direct relationship between fiscal investment and classroom results. While adequate resources are widely considered fundamental to running functional educational institutions, researchers highlighted that high expenditures do not automatically translate into leading performance across every indicator.

Addressing this dynamic, WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo noted the limitations of relying exclusively on budgetary volume. Lupo explained that while obtaining sufficient funding remains essential for maintaining a productive school system, simply possessing more money does not guarantee institutional success. He emphasized that the specific ways funds are applied play a major role in overall system quality, alongside the caliber of educators, support professionals, and the curriculum itself.

Safety within educational facilities emerged as a distinct area of concern for New York when contrasted with its top-ranked spending profile. The state landed at nineteenth place nationally in the school safety category, illustrating a noticeable gap between financial resource allocation and the everyday security environment experienced by students.

To form the overarching rankings, the study divided its 32 performance indicators into two primary areas: educational quality and school safety. Under the quality umbrella, researchers analyzed critical academic milestones and structural resources, including high school dropout rates, standardized math test scores, reading test scores, and student achievement on Advanced Placement (AP) examinations.

The quality category also incorporated broader college-readiness benchmarks and staffing indicators. These included median SAT scores, median ACT scores, and pupil-teacher ratios, in addition to class sizes, teacher credentials, and institutional funding levels.

In terms of student safety, the analysis focused on critical indicators of the school climate and risk factors facing adolescents. Specifically, the safety metrics tracked incidence rates of bullying and recorded instances of high school students who were threatened or injured on school grounds.

When placed in a regional context, New York trailed behind its immediate neighbors in the Tri-State area, despite all three states securing spots within the national top ten. Connecticut finished in second place overall with a score of 69.29, while New Jersey captured the third spot nationally with an overall score of 67.41, both outpacing New York’s eighth-place mark of 59.52.

The broader Northeast region demonstrated strong representation at the pinnacle of the national rankings. Massachusetts earned the number one overall position in the country with an evaluation score of 74.74. In addition to claiming the top overall ranking, Massachusetts led the entire nation specifically in student math and reading performance.

The remaining positions in the top tier of state school systems were filled by New Hampshire, which ranked fourth with a score of 63.63, and Wisconsin, which rounded out the top five with an overall score of 60.57.

Conversely, the evaluation identified the lowest-performing public school systems in the country across several other regions. West Virginia placed forty-seventh with a score of 40.72, followed by Oregon at forty-eighth with 40.10, and Oklahoma at forty-ninth with a score of 38.73.

The absolute lowest positions in the nationwide rankings were occupied by Alaska, which placed fiftieth with a score of 34.68, and New Mexico, which finished at the bottom of the list in fifty-first place with an overall score of 29.96.

The data underpinning the WalletHub ranking was gathered from prominent federal statistical agencies and public health databases, with information collected as of June 22, 2026. Key data sources utilized in the comparative analysis included the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Center for Education Statistics, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ultimately, the study paints a multifaceted picture of public education in New York. While the state's nation-leading financial resources continue to anchor a top-ten school system, the data indicates that bridging the gap with higher-ranked regional peers will depend on turning high expenditures into measurable improvements in academic quality and student safety.
