Native Landscaping and Ecological Garden Design Program Scheduled for Cherry Valley Library

Residents, conservation advocates, and local gardeners in the Rock River Valley area will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of ecological restoration and environmentally conscious landscaping during an upcoming community presentation. Landscape architect Jack Pizzo is scheduled to lead an educational session focused on the creation and care of pollinator and rain gardens, offering insights into sustainable outdoor design for various property types.

The public event is set to take place on September 17 at the Cherry Valley Public Library, located at 755 E. State St. in Cherry Valley. Organized as a free educational opportunity, the evening will open with an informal social hour beginning at 6 p.m., giving attendees time to connect with fellow community members before the formal presentation commences at 6:30 p.m.

The upcoming session is hosted by the Wild Ones Rock River Valley chapter as part of the organization's recurring monthly educational programming. The chapter regularly provides local residents with opportunities to explore ecological concepts, with this particular session centered on practical methodologies for restoring balance to both developed and undeveloped spaces.

Organizers have designed the program to appeal to a broad audience, ranging from curious homeowners looking to enhance their backyards to experienced conservationists and representatives of regional garden clubs. Attendees will explore actionable techniques that can be adapted for private residences, civic spaces, and community-driven landscaping efforts.

A central theme of the presentation will be the vital ecological contributions of pollinator gardens. Pizzo will outline how introducing specific native plant varieties creates welcoming environments for essential insect populations, including bees and butterflies, which are integral to the health of broader regional ecosystems.

In addition to supporting pollinating insects, the presentation will detail how native plant communities offer crucial habitats for a variety of local wildlife. By reintroducing indigenous plant species into conventional landscape designs, property owners can supply the necessary shelter, food resources, and nesting environments that native fauna need to survive.

The seminar will also address the practical advantages of rain gardens, particularly regarding water resource management. Attendees will learn how deliberately placed and structured native plantings can absorb and filter heavy rainfall, significantly reducing the volume of stormwater runoff that strains local drainage systems.

Through this natural filtration process, rain gardens help preserve and enhance overall water quality in the surrounding watershed. The presentation will examine how managing runoff at the property level prevents sediment and contaminants from reaching regional waterways, ultimately bolstering environmental health across the broader community.

Beyond pure environmental function, the session will emphasize how ecologically designed landscapes improve community resilience while maintaining strong visual appeal. Pizzo will demonstrate that functional native plantings can be seamlessly incorporated into planned landscapes without compromising ornamental beauty or neighborhood aesthetics.

Those attending the event will receive practical, step-by-step guidance covering the fundamental phases of garden development. The talk is structured to cover the entire life cycle of pollinator and rain gardens, including early site assessment, layout design, proper installation practices, and ongoing seasonal maintenance routines.

The guidance provided during the lecture is intended to be versatile, offering solutions that scale from modest residential flowerbeds to larger public green spaces. Gardeners and civic planners alike will gain perspective on how the principles of ecological restoration can be successfully applied across different property sizes and community projects.

The featured speaker brings decades of specialized industry experience to the presentation. Pizzo is the founder and principal of The Pizzo Group, an ecological restoration enterprise that was established in 1988 and has since grown into one of the most prominent firms of its kind operating in the Midwest.

Over its decades of operation, Pizzo's company has achieved substantial professional acclaim, earning more than 170 industry awards for its restoration and landscaping endeavors. The firm’s long-standing track record highlights the viability and impact of large-scale ecological land management throughout the region.

Pizzo is also an active leader within the broader conservation community, serving on numerous boards associated with environmental preservation initiatives and prescribed fire groups. His professional leadership experience includes serving as the past president of the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

A published author whose professional focus remains centered on sustainability and the establishment of natural habitats, Pizzo will share his comprehensive perspective on how thoughtful landscape stewardship can yield lasting environmental benefits. The upcoming Cherry Valley presentation aims to equip the community with the foundational knowledge required to cultivate resilient, nature-friendly landscapes.
