Mississippi Man Charged with Murder in Fatal AT&T Store Shooting That Left Employee and Customer Dead

A 71-year-old Mississippi man has been taken into custody and faces multiple felony charges following a deadly shooting at an AT&T retail store in Gulfport that claimed the lives of an employee and a customer.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Samuel Jerome Andrews of Harrison County. Following his apprehension by law enforcement, online jail records indicated that Andrews was formally booked on two counts of first-degree murder as well as one count of shooting a firearm into a group. He is currently being detained without bond while the legal proceedings against him move forward.

The two individuals who lost their lives in the gunfire were identified by Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer as 31-year-old Shane Basquill and 78-year-old Mary Anne Oberlies. Basquill, a resident of Kiln, was working inside the retail outlet during his regular shift, while Oberlies, who lived in Gulfport, had entered the establishment as a retail customer.

The fatal encounter unfolded on the morning of Monday, Sept. 7, at approximately 11:14 a.m. at the AT&T location situated within the Crossroads Mall commercial complex in Gulfport. The sudden violence shattered the mid-morning routine of the busy shopping center, drawing an extensive and urgent emergency response from local law enforcement personnel.

According to investigative reports, Andrews arrived at the retail plaza, pulled his vehicle into the parking lot, and stepped outside with a weapon. Investigators allege that the suspect fired an initial gunshot directly into the storefront before proceeding through the entrance to continue discharging rounds at those positioned inside the building.

Witness accounts emerging in the aftermath of the tragedy have painted a harrowing picture of the events that transpired during the attack. Eyewitnesses shared that Basquill acted with immediate bravery upon realizing that an armed assailant was advancing toward the retail storefront.

Courtney Ladner, a witness who spoke with local media, recounted that someone on the premises shouted Basquill's name to alert him of the impending danger. In response, the young worker immediately attempted to rush to the front glass doors in a desperate bid to secure the entrance and shield the people trapped within the establishment.

Before Basquill was able to reach and lock the entryway, the gunman commenced firing into the facility. Witnesses noted that the worker devoted his final moments to attempting to secure the perimeter and protect innocent bystanders from the incoming gunfire before being fatally struck.

The chaos continued as another customer inadvertently walked into the active crime scene immediately following the initial gunfire. Carl Musgrove explained to regional news reporters that he stepped inside the retail shop only moments after the fatal shots were fired, entirely unaware of the violence that had just occurred.

Musgrove found himself face-to-face with the armed suspect, who issued a chilling and direct warning rather than opening fire on him. According to Musgrove, Andrews spoke with an unsettlingly calm demeanor, telling him that he needed to leave the premises immediately because he was killing everything inside.

Following that ominous exchange, Musgrove managed to turn around and exit the storefront without sustaining physical harm. The suspect subsequently fled the scene of the shooting, prompting an immediate regional search by responding law enforcement officers who eventually intercepted and arrested Andrews.

Following the suspect's capture, police units established a wide security perimeter around the Crossroads Mall shopping strip. Yellow crime scene tape was strung across the parking lot and store facade to preserve forensic evidence while investigators documented the scene and interviewed remaining witnesses.

Public records show that Andrews remains in Harrison County custody without bail. It was not immediately clear whether the 71-year-old suspect has secured legal representation or if a public defender has been assigned to handle his defense against the severe capital-level charges. The Gulfport Police Department was contacted regarding further operational details surrounding the case.

Investigators and local officials have noted that a clear motive behind the fatal double shooting has not yet been established. Furthermore, reports indicate that Andrews did not possess any prior criminal history leading up to the deadly confrontation at the commercial center.

Authorities are continuing their comprehensive investigation into the fatal incident and are actively encouraging anyone with additional surveillance footage, information, or eyewitness observations to come forward. Members of the community can contact the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959 or submit tips anonymously through Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898.
