Man Arrested Following Stockton Police Pursuit and Deputy-Involved Shooting

A midnight vehicle chase through the streets of Stockton culminated in a deputy-involved shooting early Thursday morning, resulting in the apprehension of a 27-year-old motorist after an alleged attempt to strike a law enforcement officer with his automobile. Authorities confirmed that despite the discharge of service weapons during the encounter, no physical injuries were sustained by either the suspect or the responding deputies.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office identified the apprehended individual as Julio Llerenas. Following his arrest at the conclusion of the multi-stage pursuit, Llerenas was processed into custody with bail set at $140,000. He remains scheduled to make an initial appearance before a judge in local court on September 14 to face formal charges stemming from the incident.

The sequence of events began shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, when patrol deputies attempted to initiate a routine traffic stop in the vicinity of South Tuxedo Avenue and North Pershing Avenue. Rather than complying with emergency lights and pulling over to the shoulder, the driver chose to ignore official commands and accelerated away from the scene.

The driver’s immediate refusal to stop forced deputies to initiate an active vehicle pursuit through municipal roadways. The suspect navigated through Stockton corridors during the overnight hours, prompting pursuing units to maintain visual tracking while coordinating tactical responses across local intersections.

The chase rapidly shifted toward major regional transit arteries, eventually leading toward the southbound Interstate 5 on-ramp situated at March Lane. It was at this critical freeway access point that law enforcement personnel attempted to deploy intervention maneuvers designed to box in the fleeing vehicle and bring the high-speed pursuit to a safe resolution.

According to statements released by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, the situation escalated rapidly during the containment effort on the on-ramp. Investigators reported that Llerenas’ car was maneuvered in an apparent attempt to assault a deputy who was actively engaged in the stop, posing an imminent physical threat at the scene.

Faced with the direct hazard of a moving vehicle directed toward law enforcement personnel, a deputy discharged their firearm. The decision to use lethal force in such encounters reflects standard tactical training, where an approaching motor vehicle can be classified as a deadly weapon capable of inflicting severe bodily harm or catastrophic injury to officers operating outside their patrol cruisers.

Despite gunfire being directed at the vehicle during the confrontation on the March Lane ramp, the suspect managed to maintain control of the automobile and continued his flight from law enforcement. The pursuit resumed as the driver fled the immediate perimeter of the highway interchange and maneuvered back onto surface streets.

The evasion effort was ultimately halted a short distance away near the intersection of Melbourne Avenue and Acacia Street. Law enforcement units successfully surrounded the vehicle at this secondary location, taking Llerenas into custody without any further physical confrontation or additional shots being fired.

Remarkably, emergency evaluations conducted immediately following the arrest revealed that nobody had been struck or wounded during the exchange of gunfire. Both Llerenas and the involved sheriff’s deputies emerged from the high-stress confrontation completely uninjured, an outcome considered exceptionally fortunate in critical officer-involved shooting scenarios.

In accordance with standard administrative protocols governing critical incidents and the discharge of official firearms, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office will not be the primary investigative body examining the shooting itself. Instead, the California Highway Patrol has been tasked with conducting an independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the use of force.

The deployment of an outside agency such as the California Highway Patrol serves as a vital safeguard designed to ensure complete transparency, impartiality, and public trust throughout the review process. Investigators will evaluate the positioning of the patrol vehicles, the trajectory of the gunfire, and the precise mechanical actions of the suspect’s car during the confrontation on the on-ramp.

Following the suspect’s booking and the containment of all related scenes, law enforcement officials issued public assurances clarifying that the incident had been entirely isolated and that there was no lingering danger to the surrounding Stockton community.

With the active phase of the investigation shifting toward the legal system, attention now turns toward the San Joaquin County judicial process. Llerenas remains held on his six-figure bail pending his September 14 court appearance, where prosecutors are expected to formally present charges related to felony evasion, assault on an officer, and other offenses connected to the early morning pursuit.
