LAPD Cracks Down on Massive 6th Street Bridge Minibike Gathering, Citing Scores of Riders and Seizing Dozens of Vehicles

A specialized task force from the Los Angeles Police Department launched a targeted enforcement operation on the 6th Street Bridge over the weekend, resulting in the citation of roughly 70 individuals and the impoundment of dozens of unauthorized motorized minibikes. The high-profile intervention disrupted a massive street takeover that had brought regular traffic to a standstill across the iconic span.

According to department officials, members of the LAPD Street Racing Task Force arrived on scene to encounter a crowd of more than 70 people operating small motorized bikes on the active roadway. Investigators reported that participants were actively obstructing traffic flow, executing hazardous maneuvers such as donuts and wheelies, riding in the opposing lanes of traffic, and weaving unpredictably around other motorists who were attempting to cross the bridge.

Authorities noted that the individuals participating in the disruptive gathering spanned a wide demographic spectrum, with participants estimated to be between 13 and 50 years of age. A notable number of the riders were young adolescents who were being guided and accompanied by older adults, several of whom were later identified by law enforcement as the parents and guardians of the minors involved.

Police officials highlighted the severe public safety risks inherent in operating minibikes, often referred to as pocket bikes, on public infrastructure. The department explained that these miniature vehicles lack the mandatory safety apparatus found on standard street-legal motor vehicles, suffer from low visual profiles that make them difficult for other drivers to spot, and exhibit high physical instability. Under such conditions, authorities warned, a single driving error can swiftly lead to catastrophic injury or death.

In a formal statement addressing the weekend action, the LAPD emphasized that officers handled the operation with considerable care and deliberation. Recognizing that a substantial portion of the participants were underage youths who might not fully comprehend the hazards of navigating active roadways on miniature bikes, the task force aimed to neutralize the hazard safely while preventing potential collisions or pedestrian injuries.

The aggressive response reflects a broader municipal stance against illegal street takeovers and associated disturbances that disrupt neighborhoods throughout the region. Deputy Chief German Hurtado affirmed that law enforcement will no longer tolerate the widespread transit problems and public safety threats caused by these gatherings, signaling sustained enforcement against unauthorized roadway closures across Los Angeles.

Law enforcement officials also sought to clarify the legal scope of street takeover crackdowns, noting that municipal and state enforcement is not confined strictly to passenger cars and modified sports vehicles. Authorities explained that the same regulations apply to large-scale congregations of dirt bikes and minibikes, emphasizing that operating miniature motorized cycles on active roadways with underage operators under 18 years old is strictly unlawful.

During the enforcement sweep on the bridge, officers handed down citations referencing California Vehicle Code Section 21720, which regulates the unlawful operation of pocket bikes on public streets and highways. In total, officers issued approximately 70 citations and ordered the removal and impoundment of around 70 motorized minibikes from the scene.

Among those caught in the sweep were Marvin Deleon and his 13-year-old daughter, Leilani Deleon, both of whom received formal citations and watched their bikes get loaded onto tow trucks. Speaking to reporters following the incident, the father explained that the gathering was organized as a celebratory birthday rideout rather than a malicious disruption.

Deleon voiced frustration with the police response, contending that riding alongside his teenage daughter provided adequate safety and should not be treated as a criminal offense. He maintained that as a parent supervising his child on the roadway, the outing should have been permitted as a harmless shared recreation rather than a target for police intervention.

Challenging the department's characterization of the event, Deleon rejected the label of a street takeover, insisting that the assembly was simply a large-scale motorcycle rideout. He further contested claims that the group immobilized the bridge, asserting that participants did not intentionally stop moving traffic during their transit across the structure.

Leilani Deleon described the experience of being detained by officers, explaining that she was restrained with zip-ties during the processing of the crowd. The teenager recounted that the restraints left physical marks on her wrists and stated that the group had not intended to flee from law enforcement when the task force moved in to box them in on the bridge.

The elder Deleon also noted that previous interactions with local police had concluded without such strict disciplinary measures. He stated that in earlier encounters, officers had permitted the group to proceed provided that all participants wore protective helmets and avoided blocking transit lanes or engaging in reckless behavior.

A contentious point of debate centered on statutory age requirements for motorized cycles, with Deleon questioning the legal basis for penalizing a 13-year-old riding under parental watch. Despite his demands for written proof showing that his daughter was too young to operate the bike legally on public streets, officers carried out the citations in strict accordance with the vehicle code.

The Los Angeles Police Department concluded that the primary objectives of the enforcement initiative were to curb dangerous roadway takeovers, deter unlawful motorized gatherings, and educate young riders and their families on the legal and physical realities of street travel. Officials reiterated that regular enforcement operations will persist to ensure public streets remain safe and accessible for all roadway users.
