Florida Man Extradited to Georgia Following Indictment in 2016 Craigslist Babysitter Rape Case

A 42-year-old man has been formally indicted and extradited to Georgia in connection with a violent kidnapping and sexual assault that occurred nearly a decade ago, bringing renewed focus to a complex multi-county cold case investigation. Julius Hunter now faces severe criminal charges in DeKalb County following forensic breakthroughs that tied him to a predatory scheme targeting vulnerable job seekers.

Last month, a DeKalb County grand jury returned an indictment charging Hunter with rape, aggravated sodomy, and kidnapping. The charges stem directly from a traumatic July 2016 incident in which a 19-year-old woman was lured to an unfamiliar residence under the premise of temporary employment and subsequently subjected to hours of abuse.

According to official investigative reports, the young victim had responded to an advertisement listed on the classified website Craigslist. The posting advertised an overnight babysitting opportunity, offering a payout of $300 and promising to cover the cost of a rideshare service to transport the worker directly to the designated property.

Upon arriving at the specified address in the city of Clarkston, the victim quickly discovered that the situation was entirely fabricated. There were no children present at the location. Instead, she encountered two adult men inside the residence, creating an immediate and alarming atmosphere of danger.

Prosecutors detailed that the young woman attempted to leave the property immediately after recognizing the suspicious circumstances. However, her attempts to escape were forcibly thwarted. She was held captive inside the dwelling, where she was physically restrained, assaulted, and repeatedly raped over the course of several hours by a perpetrator later identified as Hunter.

The ordeal lasted until the following day, when the victim was finally able to depart the Clarkston residence. Upon exiting, she managed to hail a passing taxi and urgently instructed the driver to contact emergency authorities via 911, setting an immediate law enforcement response into motion.

Responding police personnel quickly arrived to assist the distressed teenager, securing the immediate area and transporting her directly to a local medical facility. While at the hospital, healthcare professionals administered specialized medical care and conducted a forensic sexual assault examination to gather vital biological evidence from the crime.

Although crime scene technicians and medical evaluators successfully retrieved biological samples from the assault, the perpetrator's identity remained elusive for years. At the time of the 2016 assault, Hunter's genetic information was not yet registered in statewide or national offender databases, preventing an immediate automated match.

Despite the initial inability to name a suspect, the forensic evidence proved critical in establishing a wider pattern of criminal activity. Crime lab comparisons revealed that the unidentified DNA collected in the Clarkston assault matched unknown biological material retrieved from other unresolved sexual assault investigations occurring across both DeKalb and Gwinnett counties during 2016 and 2017.

A major turning point in the years-long investigation finally materialized in 2021, when Hunter was convicted in a separate sexual battery case in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Following that judicial outcome, Hunter was placed on supervised probation in Florida, and his genetic profile was formally recorded in the national criminal DNA index.

The inclusion of Hunter's DNA profile in the system allowed forensic specialists to link the Florida offender directly to the previously unidentified genetic material recovered from the Georgia crime scenes. The breakthrough provided detectives with the definitive evidence required to bring formal charges before the grand jury.

Following the DeKalb County indictment, law enforcement officers apprehended Hunter in Fort Lauderdale, where he had remained on probation. Extradition procedures were completed shortly thereafter, transferring the defendant into the custody of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office to await trial on the felony counts.

Investigators have highlighted a distinct and predatory operational pattern spanning the linked cases. Hunter routinely utilized online classified portals like Craigslist to broadcast fake employment offers designed to deceive young women seeking legitimate financial opportunities.

In addition to fraudulent babysitting ads, authorities determined that the suspect posted classified advertisements soliciting candidates for roles in modeling, dancing, and massage services. These deceptive listings were allegedly crafted to isolate potential targets in private settings without immediate means of self-defense or escape.

Due to the repetitive nature of the scheme and the multi-year timeframe across several jurisdictions, law enforcement officials suspect that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. Prosecutors and detectives continue to review historical records and solicit public assistance as they prepare the state's case against Hunter.
