Feeding South Florida Rallies Community for Hunger Action Month with 'More Than a Meal' Campaign

As the calendar turns to September, residents across South Florida are being called upon to turn their communities orange in support of Hunger Action Month. The annual initiative seeks to mobilize individuals, civic organizations, and businesses to confront the pervasive challenges of food insecurity that continue to affect hundreds of thousands of households across the region.

The multi-county outreach is spearheaded by Feeding South Florida, the area’s primary hunger-relief nonprofit. Serving a massive territory that spans Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties, the organization has organized an extensive slate of fundraisers, service days, and public awareness activities designed to bridge the nutrition gap for local residents.

The urgency behind this monthlong mobilization is underscored by stark regional figures. According to Feeding South Florida, approximately one million local families grapple with food insecurity, facing regular uncertainty over how and when they will secure their next meal. Among the most vulnerable segments of this affected population are nearly 500,000 children and older adults who are at constant risk of nutritional hardship.

Hunger Action Month itself is a nationwide campaign originally established by Feeding America. Observed every September across the United States, the movement is designed to turn public attention toward systemic food shortages and inspire localized, grassroots action to support community food banks and assistance networks.

For this year’s regional observance, Feeding South Florida has established the campaign theme "More Than A Meal." The organization emphasizes that addressing food insecurity encompasses far more than simply distributing basic caloric intake to individuals in emergency situations.

Instead, the campaign highlights the broader human dimensions of hunger relief. Providing wholesome, dependable nutrition is positioned as a fundamental cornerstone for restoring personal dignity, fostering household financial stability, and instilling long-term hope among families working to overcome economic hardship.

Community members looking to support the campaign have several avenues for direct involvement throughout the month. One primary method is launching dedicated fundraising or collection drives. Residents can establish digital fundraising pages to pool donations from friends, relatives, and professional colleagues, or coordinate neighborhood drives to collect nonperishable, shelf-stable groceries.

Financial contributions are particularly vital during the campaign, bolstered by designated matched donation opportunities that allow donors to double their impact. These monetary resources provide the organization with essential flexibility to purchase high-priority goods and sustain critical logistical operations across all four serviced counties.

The local hospitality sector is also playing an active role through community-minded partnerships. Select area restaurants have pledged to participate in "dine out for a cause" programs throughout September, dedicating a portion of their customer meal proceeds directly to Feeding South Florida to help finance local hunger alleviation programs.

Direct service remains a core component of the initiative, with the organization calling for volunteers to donate their time at multiple regional hubs. Supporters are invited to work shifts sorting and packaging bulk food donations inside the organization’s primary warehouse facilities to prepare provisions for rapid neighborhood distribution.

In addition to warehouse logistics, volunteers can assist directly with culinary operations at the organization's Community Kitchen located in Boynton Beach. At this site, volunteer workers help staff prepare balanced, nutritious meals that are delivered to underserved community members throughout the area.

Public awareness efforts are further amplified through the "Go Orange" visual initiative. South Floridians are encouraged to display the signature color by dressing in orange attire, hosting orange-themed charity bake sales, and petitioning local municipal leaders and property managers to illuminate prominent regional landmarks with orange lighting.

A major highlight on the September calendar is the upcoming "Pack to Give Back" corporate challenge scheduled for September 18. Running from 8:30 a.m. to noon, the dedicated event welcomes corporate teams to work collaboratively in sorting bulk food supplies and packing critical family meal boxes.

Physical fitness and philanthropy will intersect the following morning at the annual Outrun Hunger 5K – Palm Beach County. Scheduled for September 19, the morning charity run will take place from 6:30 to 9 a.m. at Okeeheelee Park, located at 7715 Forest Hill Boulevard in West Palm Beach, offering participants an active venue to raise funds and awareness.

Through this coordinated combination of public advocacy, corporate participation, and hands-on volunteer labor, organizers hope to generate sustained momentum that extends well beyond September. By unifying residents from the Palm Beaches to the Florida Keys, Feeding South Florida aims to build a stronger regional safety net capable of ensuring that no family is left without wholesome food.
