Episcopal Church Appoints Its First Transgender Cathedral Dean in Historic Milestone

The Episcopal Church has reached a historic milestone in its institutional leadership with the installation of its first openly transgender cathedral dean. The Very Rev. Micah Cronin has formally taken on the leadership of All Saints' Cathedral in Milwaukee, marking a significant moment of representation within the national denomination and the broader landscape of American Christian ministry.

Cronin assumed his responsibilities as dean in August, taking the helm of an LGBTQ+-affirming congregation located in the Wisconsin diocese. The cathedral community maintains an active worship life, drawing an average Sunday attendance of approximately 70 parishioners who gather for regular services in Milwaukee.

Reflecting on the significance of his appointment, the 30-year-old faith leader spoke with the Episcopal News Service in an interview published earlier this month. During the discussion, Cronin emphasized that his elevation to cathedral dean illustrates that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer believers hold an authentic and rightful place within sacred spaces and Christian institutions.

Cronin framed the current era of the denomination as an intentional witness rooted in the core tenets of the Gospel. He stated to the news service that he views this particular moment in the Episcopal Church as an example of a religious body deliberately choosing to welcome and incorporate all people because of its Christian faith rather than despite it.

The journey toward cathedral leadership represents a profound personal and spiritual transformation for Cronin. Raised in a conservative religious environment in rural New York State, he experienced a church upbringing where his transgender identity was neither embraced nor recognized as compatible with faith.

A crucial turning point arrived when Cronin was 19 years old and encountered an affirming Episcopal parish in Olean, New York. Finding a faith community that embraced his identity and spiritual gifts led him to convert to the Episcopal tradition, ultimately embarking on a path toward ordained ministry.

Now leading a historic cathedral, Cronin views his distinct identity as an asset that enriches his pastoral ministry and expands the reach of the church. He observed that occupying the intersection of being both an ordained priest and a transgender individual creates opportunities to build bridges across traditional divides.

Cronin noted that his lived experience allows him to engage in rare and meaningful dialogues with people from diverse perspectives. He explained that these unique interactions provide an important avenue to share the Christian message and proclaim the Gospel in spaces and communities where it might not otherwise be received.

Before his appointment in Milwaukee, Cronin served as a transitional deacon in the Diocese of New Jersey. During that period in his ministry, he was an active writer who reflected publicly on the necessity of extending Christian tolerance across deep ideological divisions while urging believers to stay in communion with those who challenge or oppose them.

Those convictions were articulated in a 2022 essay Cronin authored for the publication Earth & Altar. In the piece, he addressed the demanding theological call to recognize the divine presence in every individual, including those whose political or social outlooks appear deeply hostile, harmful, or alien to one's own beliefs.

In the essay, Cronin argued that Christians are commanded to seek and serve Christ even among individuals who exhibit bigotry, homophobia, anti-transgender sentiment, prudishness, self-centeredness, or unprincipled behavior. He stressed that ministering across such divides is not an endorsement of destructive actions, but rather an expression of cooperating with God's redeeming love to overcome evil.

Cronin's appointment builds upon decades of institutional dialogue and policy evolution regarding LGBTQ+ participation within the denomination. Fifty years ago, the Episcopal Church established an early precedent for inclusion when its 1976 General Convention approved a landmark resolution formally affirming that LGBTQ+ individuals are entitled to full recognition and equal standing in the life of the church.

Clergy and advocacy leaders within the denomination have celebrated Cronin's transition into the role of dean as a monumental occasion. The Rev. Cameron Partridge, an active member of the advocacy network TransEpiscopal, praised the appointment as a meaningful affirmation of transgender ministry and pastoral leadership.

Partridge emphasized how significant it is that the Episcopal Church served as a spiritual home where Cronin could authentically follow Jesus and fully realize his calling as both a human being and an ordained priest. He noted that the environment of the church provided the support necessary for Cronin to step into his vocation with integrity.

The appointment also maintains a deep continuity with the local history of the Diocese of Milwaukee. Partridge highlighted the legacy of the late Rev. Gari Green, a founding member of TransEpiscopal who served within the Milwaukee diocese until her death in 2024, demonstrating Wisconsin's longstanding tradition of welcoming and uplifting gender-minority clergy.

Looking toward the future of the cathedral and the wider communion, Partridge expressed confidence that trailblazers like Green would view Cronin's elevation as an authentic sign of hope. He noted that the milestone offers transformative promise not only for the ongoing renewal of the Episcopal Church, but also for the broader world.
