Downtown Hagerstown Road Closure Set for Annual Washington Goes Purple Block Party and Recovery Walk

Motorists traveling through downtown Hagerstown should prepare for traffic disruptions this weekend as municipal officials implement a temporary street shutdown to support a major public health and awareness event. The closure will take effect on Sept. 12 to make way for the Washington Goes Purple Block Party and Recovery Walk, an initiative designed to foster local support, education, and open dialogue around substance use disorder.

According to municipal notices, South Potomac Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic between Washington Street and Antietam Street. The shutdown is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will remain in place until approximately 3 p.m., providing ample time for event staging, public activities, and subsequent cleanup operations in the downtown corridor.

To minimize disruption for commuters and local businesses, the city has established a comprehensive traffic management plan. Drivers navigating through the city center will be redirected around the affected corridor via designated detour routes. A series of electronic signs, directional indicators, traffic cones, and sturdy barricades will be stationed along adjacent intersections to guide motorists safely around the pedestrian perimeter.

Public safety authorities have coordinated logistical contingencies to ensure downtown emergency coverage remains fully operational throughout the five-hour shutdown. Although through-traffic for emergency vehicles will be restricted along the designated block of South Potomac Street, first responders will maintain complete access to render emergency assistance and medical services within the blocked perimeter whenever necessary.

Residents, business owners, and commuters seeking additional information or clarification regarding the scheduled detour routes are advised to contact municipal officials directly. Inquiries regarding the downtown road closure and related traffic impacts may be directed to the City of Hagerstown Department of Engineering & Permits at 301-739-8577, extension 125.

The block party and recovery walk are slated to welcome the public from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., transforming the street into a vibrant, family-oriented gathering space. Designed to be accessible to everyone across the community, the event carries no admission fee and is specifically structured to welcome attendees of all ages, from young children to seniors.

Organizers have curated a full afternoon of community-centered programming, highlighted by musical entertainment provided by a live DJ. In addition to music, the event will feature diverse interactive activities, offering a welcoming atmosphere where neighbors can gather, converse, and participate in shared recreational pursuits.

A central component of the afternoon will be presentations from local speakers who will take the stage to share their personal journeys through substance use disorder and their paths to sustained recovery. These firsthand narratives aim to offer direct hope to individuals currently facing challenges while providing families and neighbors with deeper insight into the recovery process.

Complementing the personal stories, numerous local health organizations and community advocacy groups will be present on-site. These organizations plan to distribute comprehensive educational materials, answer community questions, and connect individuals and families with critical support systems, prevention resources, and healthcare pathways available within the region.

Event coordinators are encouraging all attendees, participants, and community supporters to dress in purple attire throughout the day. Wearing the signature color serves as a visual demonstration of solidarity with individuals in recovery, honors lives affected by addiction, and reinforces the community's collective dedication to proactive prevention.

The event operates under the umbrella of Washington Goes Purple, a broader regional substance-use-disorder awareness campaign. The organization’s primary mission is to educate youth and the wider public on the critical risks associated with substance misuse while actively championing evidence-based prevention strategies, fostering open recovery conversations, and dismantling the social stigma that frequently prevents individuals from seeking necessary care.

The Sept. 12 block party represents only one segment of an extensive series of awareness activities taking place throughout the month. Community members can also explore the eighth annual Washington Goes Purple art exhibition, presented in partnership with the Washington County Arts Council. Titled "Broken Open: Addiction, Recovery and the Work of Love," the special gallery showcase is open for public viewing through Sept. 29.

Furthering the intersection of creative expression and recovery awareness, Washington Goes Purple and the Washington County Arts Council will also co-host a special Poetry Pop-Up event. That gathering is scheduled for Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. and will take place at 34 S. Potomac St., offering local writers and community members another platform for reflection and connection.

The monthly schedule of outreach concludes later in September with the PROSC Recovery Picnic, slated for Sept. 26 at the North Pavilion in Hagerstown City Park. Organizers announced that the picnic will feature complimentary food, guest speakers, community games, and prize raffle drawings, providing another positive environment to celebrate lasting recovery and strengthen community bonds.

Through this coordinated calendar of events, local leaders and advocates aim to make recovery resources readily accessible across Hagerstown while fostering an empathetic, well-informed community. Complete scheduling details, program updates, and organizational resources regarding all local awareness initiatives are accessible online through the official campaign portal at washingtongoespurple.org.
