Des Moines Area Prepares for Autumn With Diverse Lineup of Oktoberfest Celebrations

As the autumn season arrives across Central Iowa, communities throughout the Des Moines metropolitan area are preparing to celebrate Oktoberfest. Local venues, public parks, and neighborhood establishments are organizing a wide array of festivities designed to welcome the cooler weather with traditional Bavarian hospitality, seasonal lagers, and community-focused entertainment.

The tradition of Oktoberfest dates back to Munich in 1810, when it was initially staged as a multi-day public celebration to honor a royal wedding. The inaugural gathering featured horse races, live music, and communal drinking, proving to be such an immense success with the public that the Bavarian city decided to renew the festivities the following year, establishing a yearly custom.

Over the decades, that royal celebration evolved into the world's premier beer festival, known worldwide for its rich Märzen lagers, lively brass bands, long communal wooden tables lined with heavy steins, and traditional Bavarian clothing such as dirndls and lederhosen. The festival came to represent a distinct cultural celebration recognized across the globe.

Today, the custom serves as an international marker of the autumn season. It offers communities a reliable occasion to gather together, toast the changing weather, and take part in shared social rituals that include enjoying hearty schnitzel, participating in stein-holding competitions, and learning how to dance the polka.

Rather than hosting a single centralized festival, the Des Moines region observes the holiday across an extended schedule running from the middle of September into early October. The regional festivities take the form of neighborhood gatherings, dynamic beer hall celebrations, and special seasonal brewery events spread across various municipalities.

Throughout the metro, regional breweries mark the occasion by tapping their seasonal autumn lagers, while dining establishments update their menus with bratwurst and soft pretzels. Beer gardens and public venues regularly welcome a broad cross-section of residents, including families, cyclists, and attendees competing for local stein-hoisting bragging rights.

Among the cornerstone events on the local calendar is the 22nd Annual Des Moines' Original Oktoberfest, which stands as the metro area's largest and most established celebration. Hosted at The District at Prairie Trail in Ankeny, this long-running two-day festival consistently attracts thousands of patrons looking for an authentic outdoor festival environment.

The Ankeny festival formally begins with the ceremonial tapping of the Golden Keg, which offers complimentary pours of beer to early attendees for as long as the keg lasts. The weekend's entertainment schedule features polka bands providing dance lessons, costume contests, and a closing musical performance from the band Guilty Pleasures.

Festivalgoers at Prairie Trail can sample an extensive selection of more than 50 different beers alongside a menu of traditional German fare, such as bratwurst, schnitzel, and various pork dishes. The event runs on September 25 from 3 p.m. to midnight and continues on September 26 from noon to midnight, with general admission tickets starting at $20 per person.

Another notable seasonal option is the Des Moines Biergarten, located at the Lauridsen Amphitheater within Water Works Park at 2201 George Flagg Parkway. This pop-up German beer garden operates through a collaboration between the Water Works Park Foundation and the Orvis Horatio Group, the hospitality group known locally for Dough Co. Pizza.

The Water Works Park event creates an open-air, Munich-inspired atmosphere complete with long communal tables, oversized pretzels, and steins of Märzen lager. The setting provides a relaxed venue where cyclists, families, and after-work visitors can congregate for live polka performances and casual lawn games.

Operating across a three-day weekend, the Des Moines Biergarten opens on September 18 from 3 to 9 p.m., September 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and September 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can purchase food from rotating specialty vendors, including The Good Butcher, German Taste, and Strudl Haus, as crowd sizes steadily swell into the evening.

In downtown Des Moines, the historic Hessen Haus continues its role as a focal point for German cultural gatherings. The venue replicates a classic European bier hall, housing communal bench seating and an extensive beverage portfolio consisting of 175 German and European beers, including 50 distinct options on draft.

Hessen Haus expands its traditional Oktoberfest revelry into an outdoor street party and tent setup, hosting live polka ensembles and competitive stein-holding showdowns. The kitchen serves an assortment of classic Bavarian dishes, ranging from giant pretzels, bratwursts, and schnitzels to house-made spaetzle, bier cheese fries, and freshly baked apple strudel.

The establishment is also recognized for its interactive traditions, such as "Das Boot," a two-liter glass boot filled with beer, cider, or seltzer passed around tables as part of a drinking game. Patrons also participate in the "Jager Train," where a loud train horn signals a 15-minute window of discounted shots, including Jägermeister, Bärenjäger, Jameson, and Fireball, complemented by weekday specials like Monday promotions offering a free half-liter pour with an adult entree.

Together, these varied gatherings ensure that residents throughout Central Iowa have ample opportunity to experience the food, music, and fellowship of traditional Bavarian harvest festivities throughout the early autumn weeks.
