Chicago Police Investigate After 12-Year-Old Discharges Unattended Firearm on School Bus in Bridgeport

Chicago police are conducting an active investigation after a 12-year-old boy fired a handgun that had been left unattended inside a bag on a school bus on the city’s South Side. The alarming incident unfolded on Monday afternoon outside an elementary academy, triggering a swift emergency response from local law enforcement and district safety officials.

The event occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, in the immediate vicinity of Minnie Miñoso Academy near West 35th and South Wallace streets. The timing coincided with the regular afternoon dismissal period, a window of the day when school grounds and surrounding transit vehicles typically experience significant foot traffic and student activity.

According to preliminary findings released by the Chicago Police Department, an unidentified man had left a bag unattended outside the school premises. Inside the abandoned bag was a loaded firearm, which was left completely accessible in an area where students were preparing for their commute home.

Before the hazard could be secured by adults or transportation staff, a 12-year-old male student discovered the bag, reached inside, and retrieved the weapon. The child then pulled the trigger, discharging a single live round inside the vehicle. The bullet struck and shattered one of the school bus windows, sending glass fracturing outward and causing immediate panic.

Moments after the shot echoed through the transit vehicle, the adult male returned to the location, seized both the bag and the firearm, and swiftly fled the scene on foot. Law enforcement officers arrived shortly thereafter to find the broken bus window and gathered students, but the suspect had already vanished into the surrounding neighborhood.

Area detectives have since taken over the investigation, working to determine the identity of the man who left the weapon and how he might be connected to the incident. Authorities have not yet established whether the suspect has any formal ties to Minnie Miñoso Academy, its student body, or the third-party transportation provider contracted to operate the bus routes.

Remarkably, despite the close quarters inside the vehicle and the shattered window, no physical injuries were reported among the students, school personnel, or nearby pedestrians. Emergency responders and police confirmed that all children onboard were accounted for and physically unharmed following the accidental discharge.

The gunfire and ensuing emergency response quickly drew the attention of local residents and workers in the Bridgeport area. Miguel Lozano, an individual employed nearby, described looking out his window to see a significantly larger police presence than usual. Lozano noted that the occurrence raises difficult questions regarding how a dangerous weapon could be abandoned so carelessly and why it was brought near school transit in the first place.

Following the discharge, the Chicago Public Schools Office of Safety and Security was promptly alerted alongside the Chicago Police Department. Both entities immediately initiated a collaborative inquiry to review the circumstances surrounding the security breach and to ensure proper administrative and legal measures are executed.

In the aftermath of the incident, the principal of Minnie Miñoso Academy issued a formal message to school families to address the situation directly. The principal emphasized that student safety remains the school’s foremost priority and sought to provide clarity about the nature of the emergency that unfolded at dismissal.

In the communication, the principal explained to parents and guardians that the single shot originated from inside a bus transporting students from the campus and that the projectile struck a vehicle window. The note reiterated that, through great fortune, nobody was harmed and that all involved students were verified to be safe under staff supervision.

The school administrator also provided reassurance regarding the physical boundary of the campus, clarifying that the weapon remained restricted to the transportation vehicle and the street outside, without ever entering the main school building or campus grounds. This clarification was aimed at alleviating broader parental fears regarding the internal security of the academic facility.

The message underscored the necessity of community cooperation and vigilance regarding campus well-being. School leadership urged families and neighbors to immediately report any potential safety hazards or suspicious activities connected to the academy, noting that proactive notification allows the district to address concerns before they escalate into dangerous situations.

The principal further cited privacy regulations as the reason why specific personal details regarding the involved individuals could not be disclosed to the public, while reaffirming the school’s dedication to maintaining a secure educational environment. Meanwhile, Chicago police detectives continue to review available evidence in their pursuit of the fleeing suspect, urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
