Cape Coral Man Dies Following Officer-Involved Shooting After Home Intrusion and Armed Standoff

A violent domestic disturbance in Southwest Florida culminated in fatal bloodshed after a local man died from gunshot wounds inflicted by law enforcement officers, municipal police officials officially announced on Thursday. The violent chain of events began with a forced home intrusion on Wednesday afternoon and rapidly expanded into a multi-agency search across Cape Coral, drawing significant attention from local residents and law enforcement officials.

The suspect involved in the violent standoff was identified by authorities as 43-year-old Daniel Eric Colon, a resident of Cape Coral. The Cape Coral Police Department reported that Colon passed away on Thursday, September 10, less than twenty-four hours after sustaining severe injuries in the officer-involved shooting. He had been transported in critical condition to Gulf Coast Hospital, where medical staff performed emergency surgical procedures in an unsuccessful effort to save his life.

The violent sequence of events originally began unfolding on Wednesday afternoon in a residential neighborhood located along the 1400 block of Northeast 10th Terrace. Local emergency dispatch centers began receiving frantic phone calls after a bystander witnessed a suspect forcibly kicking down the front entrance door of a private home in the area, creating an immediate disturbance.

According to details provided by the eyewitness to 911 operators, the intruder—later identified as Colon—was visibly armed with both a black handgun and a knife as he battered his way into the dwelling. The report that the suspect was wielding multiple lethal weapons heightened the severity of the emergency call, prompting law enforcement to dispatch multiple units to the scene.

Subsequent information released by law enforcement shed light on the relationship between the suspect and the home's occupants. Speaking at a press conference organized shortly after the shooting took place, Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore clarified that the residence belonged to members of Colon’s own family. However, Chief Sizemore made a point to emphasize that Colon was explicitly unwelcome at the property at the time of the break-in.

As Colon forced his way inside, the terrorized family members occupying the home also placed desperate calls to emergency 911 dispatchers to report the ongoing break-in and request immediate protection. However, before responding officers could arrive at the residential location, Colon fled the property on foot, carrying both of his dangerous weapons out into the surrounding neighborhood.

Recognizing the immediate hazard posed by an armed suspect roaming a public area, a multi-agency manhunt was rapidly launched. Officers from the Cape Coral Police Department teamed up with deputies from the Lee County Sheriff's Office to track Colon's movements. The combined forces systematically searched nearby commercial areas to locate the fleeing suspect before further violence could occur.

The intensive search efforts culminated behind a commercial retail store. Responding officers and deputies tracked Colon to the rear of a City Mattress facility, situated at 915 Northeast 15th Place in Cape Coral. Units maneuvered into position around a dumpster area behind the business where the suspect was believed to be hiding.

As law enforcement officers approached the designated area to secure the scene, Colon suddenly emerged from a nearby bush where he had taken cover. Rather than obeying verbal commands from the armed personnel surrounding him, the suspect drew his black handgun and aimed it straight at the approaching law enforcement officers.

Perceiving an immediate and mortal threat to their lives, two Cape Coral police officers reacted by opening fire on Colon, striking him multiple times. Police officials later clarified that while Colon deliberately aimed his loaded handgun at the officers, he did not actually fire any shots during the brief and violent encounter.

No law enforcement officers or deputies suffered physical injuries during the dangerous confrontation. Immediately following the gunfire, officers on scene secured the suspect and rendered immediate aid while awaiting medical personnel. Colon was subsequently taken into custody and rushed to Gulf Coast Hospital to undergo emergency surgical intervention for his critical gunshot wounds.

Following standard administrative and operational procedures for all officer-involved shootings, the two Cape Coral police officers who discharged their service weapons have been placed on administrative leave. This protocol is routinely implemented across law enforcement agencies to allow for neutral, thorough investigations into the use of lethal force.

Chief Sizemore addressed the public and media regarding the justification of the shooting, confirming that he had personally reviewed the video recordings from the body-worn cameras worn by the involved officers. Chief Sizemore noted that the video evidence was conclusive, asserting that it was "plain as day" that Colon had his arm fully extended while holding a firearm directed at the officers.

Law enforcement officials noted that had Colon survived his injuries and recovered from surgery, he would have faced substantial criminal prosecution. Prosecutors were prepared to file charges including aggravated assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, in addition to potential aggravated assault charges stemming from his initial forced entry into his family's home.

The fatal encounter highlights the intense danger law enforcement personnel face when responding to domestic intrusions involving armed suspects. As the Cape Coral Police Department completes its formal review of the incident, the case serves as a stark reminder of how rapidly domestic property disputes can escalate into fatal public safety crises.
