Audio Recording Reveals Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith Connecting Opponent's Supporters to Past Shooting Incident

United States Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is facing substantial backlash after a recently disclosed audio recording captured her suggesting that supporters of her Democratic challenger, Scott Colom, may have had ties to a 2023 shooting incident near her residence. The remarks, recorded during an August campaign gathering, have sparked intense debate over campaign rhetoric, security concerns, and political accountability across Mississippi.

The audio was obtained by American Bridge 21st Century, a progressive political action committee known for tracking and recording political candidates during public and private appearances. The organization shared the recording with the Mississippi Clarion Ledger after obtaining it at an August 31 morning event held at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

According to event details posted on social media, the Republican lawmaker had gathered with members of the Southwest Mississippi National Guard Retiree Group. The audio captured a private side conversation between the senator and two attendees, during which the discussion turned to personal protection, threats, and a past security scare at her property.

In the recorded dialogue, Hyde-Smith brought up an individual who had previously fired shots in the vicinity of her residence, stating that the perpetrator was currently incarcerated. When an attendee asked whether she believed her political opponent was orchestrating attacks or paying individuals to target her, Hyde-Smith responded that while the candidate himself might not be directly commissioning violence, individuals supporting him could be getting caught up in the political fervor.

A campaign spokesperson confirmed that the lawmaker was referencing an October 2023 shooting that took place near her Brookhaven home. That gunfire incident, which was initially investigated by the U.S. Capitol Police, resulted in no injuries, and authorities at the time did not reach a definitive conclusion regarding whether the residence was deliberately targeted or if the senator was in immediate danger.

Efforts to seek clarification on the current status of that inquiry yielded no new details, as the U.S. Capitol Police did not respond to phone calls or email inquiries regarding the matter.

The timeline of the shooting raises significant questions regarding the senator's assertions. Colom, who serves as the district attorney for Mississippi's 16th Judicial District, did not launch his campaign for the U.S. Senate until September 2025. This means the gunfire incident occurred nearly two years prior to Colom entering the federal race as Hyde-Smith’s challenger.

After reviewing the transcript of the recording, Colom strongly rebuked the senator's insinuations, calling them insulting to both his campaign and the diverse group of citizens backing his candidacy. As a sitting prosecutor, Colom emphasized that his professional duty centers on enforcing the law and holding violent actors accountable rather than encouraging unlawful conduct.

Colom also characterized the senator's statements as a calculated effort to distract voters from her public track record and her reluctance to engage directly with constituents. He asserted that Hyde-Smith was using personal security claims as an excuse for not holding public town halls over the past six years and for deflecting scrutiny away from her votes impacting health care access in the state.

When pressed for clarification regarding whether the senator genuinely believed Colom’s backers were involved in the October 2023 incident, her campaign staff declined to provide direct answers. Instead, campaign manager Jake Monssen issued a statement rebuking American Bridge 21st Century for covertly recording private interactions at political gatherings.

Monssen argued that the campaign must prioritize security due to heightened threats in modern politics, pointing to an article by conservative activist Laura Loomer. That article claimed an individual appearing in a recent American Bridge advertisement had posted the phrase "8647" on social media—a reference interpreted as targeting former President Donald Trump.

The release of the audio also drew strong condemnation from civil rights leaders within the state. Charles Taylor, the executive director of the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP, stated that the senator's comments carried troubling undertones, particularly given past controversies surrounding her language on the campaign trail.

Taylor pointed to a widely publicized 2018 event during which Hyde-Smith remarked that she would gladly sit in the front row if invited to a public hanging. In light of that history, Taylor expressed deep dismay that a sitting senator would suggest that supporters of an African American candidate posed an inherent threat to her safety, describing such rhetoric as deeply harmful and divisive.

The controversy underscores the heightened tension defining the Mississippi Senate race, where personal safety, political messaging, and past records continue to dominate the discourse ahead of the upcoming election.
